Not clear if applicable to the E61, nevertheless please post if you get an official notice from BMW. Curious to see the response of Europa vs. America.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- BMW AG is recalling about 1.3 million cars for repair worldwide due to a possible problem with a battery cable cover in the car boot, the carmaker said today.

The recall affects 5- and 6-Series BMWs built between 2003 and 2010, BMW said in a statement.

The recall affects about 367,000 vehicles in the United States and 290,000 in Germany, BMW said.

"In some remote cases, the battery cable cover inside the boot of these vehicles may be incorrectly mounted," it said.

"This can result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, to charring or fire," the company said, adding it was not aware of any accidents or injuries to people due to the problem.

BMW said it was writing to car owners. The repair procedure in a BMW partner workshop would take about 30 minutes and would be free of charge to customers, it added.

The E60 M5 from 2006 - 2009 is on the list. A mailer is going out to all owners in the next few weeks.

Hmm, vehicle failing to start...seems that when they replaced the cable (not under any recall), the problem was solved...! Now, how do I get my $200 for towing and $50 for the part back...at least it didn't burn to the ground....now if I could find the idiot who drove his bicycle into my front fender, bounced on the hood and then apologized and drove off, I would be happy to have him repair the damage...

Cheers

George

I'm registered for recall notices posted on the NHTSA's website, and haven't gotten anything yet. Although it's for US cars, and at times, some mfr's only have recalls in the US and not Canada, it's been pretty good. Often, it notifies me quicker than the recall letter. You sign up by brand and model and year of your car. My car's a US car too, so it'll be interesting what happens though when I go in for service here, it should still pop up based on VIN, from what I understand, if a recall is valid in Canada, regardless of the origin of the car.

I'm invited for this recall, It's only a ?0,22 plastic cap. The service agent calling me was a little bit ashamed that he had to call me and that I had to visit the dealer for this.

Probably only a marketing trick to get recent owners of the 5 series to the dealer and "inform" us about the new 5 as used cars are coming in with low milage.

F11 is a beautiful car
