Dear all,

I'm coming here because nobody was able to answer my question on a french forum. So i really hope to have an answer here because i'm questionning abouit my lights.

Here is the question:

I have a 2008 BMW e61 touring 520D Automatic Sport Design with a lot of options like big sunroof, seat heating... and Xenon ! The lights works great but i just need to know how they works???

The facts:

The headlights on e61 looks like this : Oo -- oO

When i use automatic headlights, the xenon works (illustrated in blue above)(they works when needed if outside light is not enough)

When i use high beam headlights, again the xenon works (illustrated in blue above)

So when does my others headlights works???? the ones illustrated in red above?

I really do not know about this.

On my headlights i have this indication / reference: 7 177 739-08

Visible here: http://data.imagup.com/11/1136289768.JPG

and this ref too: A9717773908

My lights seems to be exactly the same as:

When i press engine start the light ajusts by itself automatically.

I do not have the wheel (jog dial)near the steering wheel to adjust the height of the headlights.

It seems that there is a bulb inside the second headlight.

The origin of the car is Belgium and still running in Belgium.

Nobody seems to know and i'm sure that the headlights are original from BMW as the entire car, nothing has been changed, replaced with non original parts.

Can someone bring me some light on this?

Do the lights indicated in red in your post come on when you flash your main beam lights by pulling back on the stalk?

Hello Phelix,

No, only the main headlights indicated in blue changes from low beam to high beam.

When i pull or when i push to lock the high beam it's always the xenon (indicated in blue above)

I have no default indicated on the computer, everything seems to work correctly but still this question and teh fact that apprently there's a light bulb in the ones indicated in red (but not active)...

Strange isn't it?

Nobody has this kind of headlights on this forum????

I retrofitted my car w/ the same exact light .... this kind of headlight is non-Adaptive ... unlike the pre-LCI the smaller/inner reflector does not shine any beam ... it only holds the bulb for the AE/Halo ring but it does nothing else.

Another kind of LCI headlight (like for all US market) that has adaptive look slightly different as the smaller/inner reflector has frosted lens (not like clear like we got) and the use for that is only during slow turn (or backup) to help shine the corner.

This is what mine look like = http://forums.5serie...-my-headlights/

I thought perhaps the inner lights would come on when you flash your main beam lights by pulling back on the stalk as xenons have a short start-up delay so halogen bulbs would be used for this function...

Hello BlaSTiWi,

Tks a lot for your indication, so you confirm that smaller lights does nothing? i was thinking the same but needed confirmation as i thought it was weird a bit.

So it holds only the angel eye halogen bulb and that's it...

Ok! i've learned something and i think i'm not the one ;o))

Tks a lot for your post BlaSTiWi.

Best regards

On my 06 E61 the inner lights come on if I flash my high beams [pull back on the stalk]. If I engage the high beams [forward] the Xenons go into high beam mode.

Yeah, as I already stated on my post #5 up above ... I guess you can say that would be one of the difference of your pre-LCI model year and the LCI OP & I got.

I have adaptive bi-xenons on my car and have now noticed the same thing - regardless of what I do the inner lamps don't illuminate!
