My Ride: e39 525i Touring, will order e61 as soon as I can decide on engine and options...
Hi all,
went for a trip through 10 european countries and came back two days ago. Car, wife and two kids.
Sweden>Germany>Switzerland>Italy>Slovenia>Croatia> Bosnia and Herzegovina>Austria>Czech Republic>Poland>Sweden
Positives:
- car is comfortable, quiet and roomy
- car is a blast to drive
- handling is fantastic
- panoramic sunroof is fantastic
- very good engine performance up to 200 km/h (car fully loaded)
- very good steptronic performance, both city, highway and in mountains (shifts down to help engine break, smooth shifts, good kickdown response when overtaking)
- GPS is a must and saves a lot of time. Avoided traffic jam on German autobahn and found hotels in Italy and Austria. MIO C710 (www.mio-tech.be) highly recommended. Fits nice on the left side of the instrument cluster.
- Economy. 30% less consumption than e39 525i. Full throttle runs in Croatia and Germany gave 10 l/100 on average whereas the 525i wanted 15 l/100 under similar conditions.
Negatives
- right leg gets cramped after a few hours
- climate control does not compensate fan speed for vehicle speed, drive faster and fan blows more
- above 200 km/h it's slow (compared to e39 525i)
- engine sound when under load and below 2000 rpm
- sometimes steptronic chooses to high gear at low speed which causes resonance and noise
The whole family loves the car.
On monday, back to work.

I will as soon as I get a chance...the unit is the size of an ipod, landscape oriented, and placed between the instrument cluster and A-pillar on the same hight as the left rear-view mirror. Fixed to the winsdscreen. The TMC antenna tucked away in the gap between windscreen and instrument panel.
Looks good.
