I have automatic tailgate and personally I don't like it much. It's too slow and manual operation is not possible. I have to admit that it's handy when car is not clean or your hands are full, but still I would not consider retrofit.

I have said earlier that Honda and Volvo has much better solutions on this area. They both allows manual operations which is usually quicker to use.

+1. I have the auto tailgate and wouldn't have ordered it if I had spec'd the car. My problem with it is that I park in a garage, and if the gate opens with the garage door down, it will hit the door....and you don't have to hold the button THAT long for it to open.

Plus I kinda feel like an idiot waiting for it to open, as if I'm too delicate to open the gate myself.

Hi,
there are some guys in Germany working actually on this ...
I have already buyed the hydraulic parts .. To complete the hardware, an additional control box and some switches and wiring is needed.
I have also spoken with my BMW dealer .. his opinion is, that it?s possible and he will support me ..

But before I will take care about this retrofit, I have to do some other things on my 530xd ( suspension, car hifi ... ).

I will post my experiances !
Regards Peter

I don't like how hard the automatic tailgate closes, it slams down with too much force. I rather prefer the soft close tailgate from my E39 touring.

I thought this would be a dumb feature... but 10,000 miles into the 535xi, I really like it.

I can still open the window manually so it's easy to toss in a briefcase or coat without waiting for the automatic thing to do it's thing.

I guess if I was in a hurry to load a new a big-screen TV into the wagon the couple seconds it takes to open would be a concern but I have no intentions of robbing an electronics store anytime soon!

Lastly, ours closes just fine.

Don't get me wrong, life would still be okay without an automatic closing tailgate, but I really like ours.

If you decide to proceed, best of luck!

Hi Peter,

How much did you spend for the hydraulic parts? How much do you think could it cost the whole operation?
Please keep me informed as I would love to have it too.
Regards
Marco

Hello Marco,
new price for hydraulic unit and the hydraulic lifter is between 1300,- and 1500,- Euro (don?t know exactly.. )
I have bought them on Ebay (new) for 210,- Euro

The control unit approx. 120,-
For switches, covers, etc. I?ll estimate ~ 200,-

Actually I?m (my BMW dealer) clarifying if the wiring harness is already installed or a retrofit wiring kit is available ..

There will be additional costs for coding, which I?m not able to estimate now ..

Regards Peter
