Amber "check engine soon" light - ODB-II code P1554

How can I find out the cause and meaning of an ODB-II code without taking it straight to the dealership for analysis?
I've a 2006 5 series wagon and am getting an intermittent P1554 code. I've read two different meanings for this code, one more serious than the other.
P1554 Cruise Engaged Circuit High Voltage
P1554 Engine Position System 'A' Performance (Bank 1)
I think the first might be a generic non make specific error, but the second might be a BMW specific error. Google isn't giving me a lot of help on this.
So, is there someone who knows what this error means?

Neither my mechanic or the service manager were in today when I picked up my new wheel.
I will stop by there again soon when BOTH of them are present.
Sorry for the delay!

P1554 ... did anybody figure out what does this code mean?
I just got it on my 2006 530 xit, it runs fine, no issues with the car but the code came randomly on after a cold start and driving it for about 5 minutes. (I do lots of short distance driving to/from work and it's been fairly cold for past few weeks in Calgary)
Please let me know, help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks

bump! I just got this P1554 code...had P0597 for a few weeks (bad thermostat which I am about to replace). Not sure, but from reading E90post, it might be VANOS solenoid, just a cleaning and switching the intake one with exhaust may be a fix.
