Hello friends.

I'm expecting my new E61 anytime soon, and I wonder if the car's audiosystem can play music files encoded in AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) format. I understand that it can if I play them back via an iPod, but my plan is to store music on a flash drive connected to the USB socket.

As far as I know and as far as BMW has announced, the USB socket only supports WMA and MP3 files natively...

Oh, will have to transcode AACs to MP3s then. Or risk losing an iPod to car burglars.

Unless you have some older "Flintstone" iPod, it should fit in the center console where the interface is -- burglars shouldn't even know it's in there...

Oh! I wish they were that rational. The burglars I've known break in just in case, even though nothing is on display.

Well sure, there's always the possibility that someone will break into your car with nothing of value visible but certainly having something valuable in plain sight increases the odds. I don't know where you live but if moving to a safer place isn't an option, I'd still say put your iPod in the console -- if they steal it, that's what insurance if for...

Fair enough, I didn't think of it. And I can always buy a used iPod on eBay just for the car.

I was mistaken about this on my original post above...

According to the owner's manual (at least the US owner's manual), the USB inteface supports .MP3, .WMA, .WAV (PCM), and .AAC but not files that have DRM. It also says playlists in the .M3U format is supported but so far I haven't been able to figure out the trick to getting this working properly...

The manual also says there's a 256 kbps bit stream limit. I have .aac files on my iPod that I converted from .wav files using a 320 kbps bit stream (as little compression as possible) and they work well.

The USB interface should power down when the car goes into sleep mode. Sleep mode occurs when the car hasn't been touched for about 16 minutes. Keep in mind that opening a door will wake the car up so if you plan on testing things out, you can leave your iPod where it will be visible from the car's exterior. (You can leave a window down to help you peek at things after you've waited for the sleep mode to kick in.)
