Just a slightly "updated" version of the same engine.

The 530d is almost the same engine (minor intake manifold changes) with 218, 231 and 235 HP.

Your question was whether it's a completely new engine, so on that basis I thought that "slightly updated" answers it, meaning it's the same engine.

I suspect there are tiny mechanical changes, therefore not really worth chasing the newer motor just for a few HP.
If you want more power, a remap is the way forward. Between a 272 and 286 hp car, I would certainly chose the one which has been taken better care of.

Hi mmitev

Well I got a 272HP version, I really didn´t thought about chasing the newer engine, but I suspicion about the 286HP engine really was the same and it?s a ?original? remap af the 286 hp version came when I was ordering remap on my car.

It dosen look like much difference in the result these two models, I know there is a lot difference from tuner to tuner, but a over view shows that it end up around only 7 nm between the 272 and 286 HP version and only 7 more to the 300 hp version, that?s only 14 NM between the first and the latest.
So my thought was ?is that really a factory remap they are doing? can I get at ?original remap? well I think you are right, there is some minor mechanical changes maybe just some plastic ?

I believe the block is different between the 272 + 286 modles.

The 286 has an 'intelligent' alternator meaning it will switch off when not needed, improving the MPG.

The gearbox is also different and better when in manual mode.

Take a look at superchips.co.uk and look at the power graphs of the 2 models the torque curves are really diffrent the 286 is almost flat where as the 272 the torque just drops off. So im thinking that they did more than change the block also the fuel consumption is much better on the 286

Is that how you determine if an engine has a different block - by looking at torque curves on chip tuners' websites?

Sorry but at this point I will just stop the pub style "discussion".

I will go back to a diesel in the not too distant future and am looking at the 535d. My clear preference is the 286hp version for the simple reason it is the LCI version with the new automatic gearbox. I've had both autos in diesel e60/61s and found the newer auto to be far more rewarding to drive. For a short while I had both the lci 525d and pre-lci 530d at the same time and the 525d actually felt a little quicker at lower speeds because the auto was much more quicker and handled the torque much better, I.e. got the power to the wheels better, only on the motorway did you really feel the 530d's extra power. That all being said, if I found a car with great spec for decent money, I would not let the old auto put me off buying it.

small correction after years...
injectors 350d 235ps = injectors 535d 286ps
injectors 350d 231ps <> injectors 535d 272ps
