I thought I would give you a short update on my experience with the "DIY remap" which I did using the Evolve Switch, which I purchased using the Group Buy on the bmw5.co.uk forum.
The evolve switch gives you a little box that allows you to read and write ECU files via the OBDII port. Main benefit is that you can re-write your original map before bringing in the car for a service.
As I was uncertain how it would work, I had some email and phone contact with Imran of Evolve and he was very helpful - so I went ahead with the purchase.
When I received the Switch, I followed the instructions from the E90 forum, which worked very well. I took a bit of a chance, as the required software is PC-only and I drive an Apple MacBook Pro. Using a Parallels install of Windows, the software worked fine.

I linked the switch to my pc, installed the required firmware. I then linked the switch to my ODBII and read the ECU. I emailed the ECU file to Evolve, who sent me back the remap, which I then uploaded onto the car. It was a piece of cake. During the uploading processes, I got loads of error messages on the iDrive, so I started to get worried. After everything was completed everything was done.
The switch can also read and clear error messages, but unfortunately not the airbag error - I guess the passenger seat sensor mat is shot...
Back on topic: during a test drive I have noticed a significant increase in power and acceleration, so I am very happy so far with my purchase. I have not dynoed the car, but Evolve seems to be one of the better remappers in the UK, so I believe their statement that the remap brings my E61 530d from 218bhp/500nm to 265bhp/620nm

Did remap my 530XD touring 2006 at evolve like more than a year back already, and was (and still today) very happy with it (outside of cost...). Car is still flying. So if you see a 530Xd with french license plate on M4...
Drive safely though.

Forgot few observations: also kept the flaps just as souvenir... none of them were damaged and car was ~ 60kmiles when these were removed. (engine is 530D N2 type so got wider axle on flaps). Also noticed the amount of 'deposit' was fairly low compared to some other UK equivalent cars flaps. I suspect that where you buy your diesel matters. I always go for high quality diesel and believe, from what I have seen, this makes a big difference.
