Hi All,

I need to do an oil change on my car very soon. In the manual it states that I need to use Long Life 04 or alternatively Long life 01. I don't understand why they call it like this? Is this so I'm forced to buy it via BMW? Normally oil is indicated like for example 10W40 or 5W40 etc. But can't find anything like that in the manual.
Any idea what oil Brands and types are suitable to be a Long Life 04? In addition, what's the difference between long life 04 and 01 and how long can you keep it in the engine before replacing it.

Sorry if I'm asking too many questions in one go

Thanks for the response!

LL01 and LL04 is quality codes that BMW have stated. You are not forced to buy BMW oil, but it's reccomended that you use oil that have this BMW "approval". You can find this coding on oils from Castrol, Mobil as well as BMW.

Here you can find some: http://www.oelwelt24.de

I have just done mine and used Mobil One (all 8+ litres of it). An easy job once you have jacked the car high enough to get under it! Try doing an air filter, thats a whole other story!

For people in UK. Cheapest place to buy oil is Costco. Mobile One (both TD and extra protection) is 19.99 for 4 liters.

Now I don't use regular engine oils, and I know Castrol Synthetic engine Oil meets the required BMW Standards. Now for the Castrol Synthetic engine Oil changing intervals. TRUE just as BMW says, Their own brand of Synthetic old and Castrol Synthetic engine oil can last up to 15,000 to 20,000 miles before engine oil changes. But my oil expert friends off the record in the Synthetic OIL business say they yet to up with an oil filter that can go much over 7,500 miles before starting to signs of oil filter breakdown. (By the way I get mine change for $65.00 at my certified private mechanic, and he also resets my idrive to schedule it for the next engine oil change in 7,500 miles, and my BMW dealer charges $200.00 for Synthetic engine oil change, get this, as they say to me when I ask for an oil and filter change: You mean an engine oil and a filter service, with the system scope read! (All this B.S. BMW Jargon trying to get more of our money!!! LOL)

So knowing this info, and not wanting to risk hurting my BMW engine, I change my Castrol Synthetic engine Oil every 7,500, just to be on the safe side.

Hope this helps a little with your questions about the engine oils for your BMW.
