I see most posts about 535d. I wonder why there aren't many more 525d entusiasts of the 525d: more frugal and "green", excelente performance. Is it all about power? Now that speed tickets are getting more an more heavier and people should be more concerned about environment, what am I missing? By the way, the lease rent diference is just 100?

I'm fine with the 525dTouring. In UK the roads are so busy these days that the 535d really isn't necessary. The 525 certainly has enough power for the roads I use predominantly. 530d is nice though - I test drove one before opting for 525. Still in the break-in period so haven't fully tested the power yet.

I'm certainly a 535d enthusiast.

First Post!

I'm considering the 530d touring. We've had a 330d for 3 years and been really pleased with that so a new 530d (with slightly more powerful engine) seems a natural progression.
From our point of view, we've never considered a 535 as it only comes with an auto box and we're manual freaks!

As "we" (i.e. she who must be obeyed!) wants to feel we're "trading up", the 525 might seem like a bit of a step down after the 330. It's still a damn fine engine, though! The torque of all the BMW diesel sixes is phenomenal, and I actually prefer the driving experience than with a petrol. The relaxed power delivery seems to suit a Touring perfectly.

I find myself thinking I would have been just as happy in a 525d or 530d. Not that I don't love the extra power of the 535d, just that I really don't get to use it that often. Not to mention that the power delivery is so smooth, you really don't get the thrill of acceleration as you would think.

I've never tested a 525d, but I would imagine that you would obviously notice a difference in a head to head race against a 535d However, I'm betting that on their own, the difference would be negligible. Of course, that is just an assumption, maybe someone who has actually driven both can chime in.

I'd say test drive the 525d and if you're happy with the performance, go for it.

I will be driving my 535d for a few years (4 or 5). If I would have opted for a 525 or 530, there was more to wish for, crowded streets or not. And knowing myself, the car would be traded in after 2 years for a faster one.
Then after signing the contract you realise how much depreciation a car like this has and bump yourself for not getting the bigger engine in the first place.

Of course this is how i think of it, my wife tells me not to get an expensive car in the first place.
Other people think i'm stupid because i'm not leasing and some of my friends are asking what was wrong with my former mercedes.

Well, I realize that i'm not helping you this way. Buy an E61 and you will be happy for some time or even some time more.

Welcome on board here at the Touring section !

If budget is no issue go for the 535D, but please test drive both. It also depends on all options you wish to buy.
