The 47 was OBC reading I am currently doing some brim to brim tests and the OBC is looking fairly accurate.
It may be now, but I am wondering if it was before

OK done some brim to brim tests over the past couple of weeks and I have an avaerage of 35.9mpg.... thats shocking for a 2.5d

Now I have to make the decision whether I complain bitterly to BMW or whether I sell it and get something more reasonable. I refuse to accept that a car that only weighs 50kg more than the E46 touring (well according to the blurb) will have such an impact on economy.

Or do I risk ?300 and get it remapped. (hmmmmmmmmmmmmm).....

Shocking?? You serious??

I managed 26mpg from my 535d over 21k miles, I got 33mpg from my e46 320d sport touring over 24k miles, I am currently getting 33.6mpg from my 120d m-sport auto and the manual 525d I had the other day returned 31mpg over the course of the day.

BMW say you should expect around 35.3mpg, you are bettering that, so what do you think they will do??

A remap will never improve your mpg, maybe by 1 or 2 mpg on a long run. A tuning box will however throw your OBC readings out, I had 2 different ones on my 320d and my OBC went from saying 36mpg to saying 47mpg, makes you feel better but nothing more.

If you sell your car you are only going to loose loads anyway, this will take 10's of thousands of miles to recoup.

What did you expect to get from it??

Never reset the average mpg on my 535d since new and after 18,000miles I've averaged 27.9mpg which I think is brilliant for a 3.0 auto and all the trash I give it with good mix of town and country driving. A recent 1,300 mile tour of Scotland showed 33mpg on the journey computer.

I get 34mpg with my 535 with car having just done 18k in one year, but thats mostly motorway driving and with the speed police being so prevalent it tends to be fixed on cruise at 70-80mph!!!

I didn't think 36MPG for a car that weighs 1.8 tonnes is auto and does 0-60 in 8secs was bad???

I've had my 530d for 8,000 miles now and averaging 34.8mpg with a real mix of driving.

I think that's pretty good?

I am really confused.. When I first got the car drove it nice and carefully home getting about 47mpg average. Wonderfull 5mpg more than the 330d I had previously.

Any one else experienced problems similar..... I've nearly had enough and its killing my enjoyment of an otherwise fabulous car.

I know what you are talking about , I have a very similar issue with the economy of my 530d in that my X5 is more economical when both are driven in a similar way and my earlier E39 530d was also better. I have tried everything recalibrating, changing driving style, using the autobox in different modes, not bothering with the OBC but doing it as a measured distance, any which way, it is still not great. I have decided to put up with MPG as I like the car so much. What else do you buy that is as versatile and as good?

The thread of my earlier question is

Let me know if you crack this problem, if indeed , if we have a problem a number of other members think we are worrying about nothing, they may be right.

I have got 32.4 mpg average from my 525d auto other a period of two years. All I can say is that the economy is crap around town with stop start trafffic!

Was your initial tests when the car was new ? I have a theory (unproven) that many manufacturers program the ecu's to restrict performance in early milage.

Audi ECU's are proven to have an economy and performance mode which is selected on driving behaviour and is only reset on service or leaving the ignition on for several minutes without engine running. This is deliberate so that they can publish good economy and performance figures.

Our 525d (not touring) averages around 32-35mpg at 22k. Considering a 525i does around 25mpg, thats not bad for a 6 cyl 2.5 diesel. You might get 40mpg+ if you buy high quality fuel, and drive with a feather foot, and a/c etc off, but that would be defeating the objective of having a car such as this!

If you want more ecomony, a smaller, less poweful diesel car would probably be better. Maybe a 118d...
