525d 36mpg driven carefully WTF????? :'(

:'( :'( :'(
I am really confused.. When I first got the car drove it nice and carefully home getting about 47mpg average. Wonderfull 5mpg more than the 330d I had previously.
About 2 weeks after it had to go in for some work to do with the airbag warning coming on... turned out it was the boot closing module that was corrupting the system.
Brill it was fixed and updated to latest CIP.
I noticed after some careful driving that the mpg was rediculous around 20mpg, but thanks to this forum I found that the units had been left at default when the dealer re-flashed the software.. understandable as its microsoft, we all use US units dont we
OK so I set the units to UK mpg and the economy got better instantly but I have never been able to achieve the same level of economy that I got when I first drove the car.
Is it possible that the dealer could have overwritten any calibration data for the fuel usage measurement, if they've bo!!oxd that up what else has been lost.........
Any one else experienced problems similar..... I've nearly had enough and its killing my enjoyment of an otherwise fabulous car.

It's possible that the maps have been 'modified' and may not be as efficient. However, getting a BMW dealer to admit/understand will be a challenge!

The anoying thing is that its a manual and I'm doing a lot of motorway and A road driving, hardly any stop start.
I got the diesel to be economical, I get more out of my wifes A class petrol. :'(

If they've done a full CIP then all the engine maps are updated too I believe. (This is obviously very bad if you've had if 'chipped' as you lose it all...)

Considered getting it chipped as the 330d I had before had a Hartge tuning and it definately improved efficiency but if I chip and it doesnt solve the problem thats ?300 down the drain.
In two minds whether to sell the car and get something more economical. Well at least tried and tested economical.

Is the 36 mpg brim-to-brim measurement, or just OBC reading?
If OBC only - have you tried resetting? Maybe the recoding has screwed up some of the values?

Sorry to say that 36mpg when driven carefully sounds about right.
I went through the same surprise when I swapped from my 320d to the 525d. Mine is Auto admittedly but with a mixed motorway and town use I get 32mpg on just about every tank. The OBC has been very accurate when I've checked it.
The literature states a combined 35.3mpg for the Auto.
The economy option would be the 520d but I do like my 6 cylinders.....

A) MarcM says he was getting 47 pre-service.
I get 32 or so with a 535d driven mostly on short (but not urban) trips

20" Hartge Nova 7. Previously 19" staggered 172s
Was the 47 just an OBC figure or checked? That sounds like the suspicious value to me.
