USB sticks for music...

I don't have a USB port in my car, but a friend of mine has a 2008 X5. I want to recommend a USB stick for MP3s.
I was wondering what the maximum capacity the BMWs will read, and whether one needs to be careful when choosing USB sticks. I did some searches, but I'm hoping that asking in a thread will net a more tailored response.

I'm not aware of any real limitations on USB sticks. Obviously, BMW's position is that a thorough test in the vehicle is the only real test of the many variations.
What I do know is that I have an 80Gig hard drive (currently partitioned down to 40Gig) and once I get it to spin up (the power requirements of the drive are right at the edge of what the interface provides) the car can see all 40Gigs without any issue.
Based on that information, I don't think there's too much of an issue as far as a USB stick's size is concerned and since the USB stick is solid state, there should be no issues with spin-up, etc.

What I do know is that I have an 80Gig hard drive (currently partitioned down to 40Gig) and once I get it to spin up (the power requirements of the drive are right at the edge of what the interface provides) the car can see all 40Gigs without any issue.
