My Ride: 2007 530i. Purchased 6/28/07. Titanium Silver Metallic, Black Dakota Leather, Dark Poplar Trim, Steptronic, Premium Package, Cold Weather Package, Bluetooth, Adaptive Control Xenons. 10/30/07 Added OEM 124s with 245/40/18 & 275/35/18 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires. a tap on the gas brings me up to 3-4k rpm, totally insane, I also did the "25s tranny reset" which also helped a bunch.

Mine did the same thing. Once I got the pins aligned correctly the sputtering went away. The light eventually reset itself and the next time I took it in for service, they said no error messages showed up (which kind of surprised me).

check engine/malfuntion light on after spring booster install...
other than pin alingment (I have plugged unplugged 5 times; no change)

without clearing the error with the tool
any new ideas on why or how to fix this error message??

Also, make sure you get the right one for your transmission. There is a difference between manual and automatic.
