^^
That's what everyone keeps saying, but I am just way to lazy for that and don't have any kind of set-up at home to do that. Also, I don't get a kick out of actually doing the DIYs -- I like the end product!
Anyway, problem solved and no more driving myself crazy deciding if I should or should not fit black tips... I just went ahead and ordered the OEM Black-Chrome tips from Schmiedmann

I just came across the pics on the BMWUSA.com CPO used car pages. I think it gives the car quite a clean look and also works well with the hyper-silver OEM rims (which I have)... maybe I will order these Black-Chrome tips afterall
Attachment 104255
(Notice the nice rims on sale in the back ground?!)

Ok,
today is the day, after work I will wrap my tips with 3M cf-Foil,will let you know on monday if it lasts and will show you some pictures.
I'm a little unsure about the fixity of the foil wrapped in such a hot place like the tips..
time will show, if not I will paint it black!( like the rolling stones

please let us know how it goes.
the guy who sells the 3M DI-NOC (or whatever the CF wrap is called) products here says he wrapped a motorcycle's exhaust with it and there were no problems.
hopefully it wasn't just marketing talk

I have fitted the tips to the car and really like the clean look they give to the rear of the car and IMHO it enhances focus on the rims
I am having the M5 Trunk Finisher and M5 Trunk Spoiler fitted on Wednesday, so will post up better pics (from a camera, not a phone!) in a new post with those mods also installed.
As you can see, the US-spec 550i exhaust tips are a different shape to the Europe-spec 550i exhaust tips
I really did not expect that and it means you can see the clips on the inside when you are up close. I might try to paint them black on the inside, but its only noticable up close.
Here are the before & after pics so anyone interested in this mod can see the difference in look and fitment -- let me know what you think...
