Looking to upgrade the base audio system in my 545i, any suggestions?
I am not totally happy with the stock system in my 545i. It is "decent" but I would expect better for a $63k car. The factory system in the '05 up Mustangs is far superior for example. I am thinking about upgrading all the speakers but would like to do it on a reasonable budget. I am not looking for ground shaking bass. I was thinking new components maybe in the front/rear, center channel, and some new 8" subs under the seats. I am very capable with wiring and building baffle plates etc. as I have done a decent amount of systems. I am looking for some suggestions on what works well in these cars and any tips/tricks! Thanks!

My Ride: 2008 BMW E60 550i. Air scoops, black grille, M5 rear lip spoiler, AFE CIA stage 2, AFE throttle body spacer, RPI axel back GT exhaust, full replaced sound system including alpine amp, JL audio 12W3v3 sub, focal component speakers
i changed out my speakers and added a sub. What was different with the BMW over the cars i had had in the past was the fact the component speakers were a tweater and a 4 inch speaker, rather than the typical 6 1/2 inch speaker. This gave me less options. I didnt go the cheaper route so i got 4 sets of Focal components that ran $300 a speaker. so $1,200 just for the speakers. all and all the system coast me $4,000. Just wanted to make you aware of the 4inch if you didnt know already

I will be soon taking out all my audio from the car and turning that back to stock. I have earthquake subs and a fosgate driving them.

For starters I installed a JBL MS-8. Even with the stock speakers it sounds a lot better and actually improved the bass.

From there you can upgrade the speakers, install subs, sub amps, etc...The MS-8 would be the initial sound processing "brain".

I just added a sub in the trunk with a small amp. I did not cut through what would be the ski port and the bass in the car is plenty for me. In fact, I can't turn it all they way up. No other speaker change and I am more than pleased with it. There are several DIY's here for the amp install if you need it.

I have also looked into upgrading my speakers for my 2004 525i. I think most people would suggest going with a stronger amp and also upgrading the subwoofers underneath the seat. I've read that its good to use earthquake sws 8 for the subwoofers and a blaupunkt amp.
