Just installed aux on E60 for ipod. For now using headphone out.

Sounds poor.

When I get adapter for line level in will sound appreciably better?

I hope so.

Considerably better...you will notice the difference.

Much of it depends on the quality of the rip. At 192 vs the standard 128, the quality is noticably better. I use line out however.

Yes--here's how I did my iPod install:

Also, I ripped my CDs using Exact Audio Copy w/ LAME encoder @ 256 kbps VBR, and MP3 Gain for volume normalization.

If you are doubting Streams claim about the Monster charger... DONT. He is so right. I went from the headphone jack to the Monster charger and I cannot believe the difference. You MUST have this, IMHO.

Don't listen to them, you'll get bad alternator noise at high volume levels from that charger. Buy a modern iPod like the new Photo's and you'll have no problems with the headphone jack.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this. I use the Monster adapter and have excellent sound quality at all volume levels--with a modern (4 month old) iPod w/ color display. Perhaps my hardwiring vs. plugging it into the cigarette lighter outlet makes a difference?

No, its not the hard wiring. I didnt hard wire. I'll post pics of my set up soon...

I dont experience alternator noise with EITHER methods of connection. However, using the Monster charger gives me MUCH improved sound.

Im not saying that the headphone jack is bad sound, butto my ear, the Monster charger sounds better. Keep in mind, I had a 3 series for almost five years that had an iPod connected with only the headphone jack and it sounded great. On my e60, the Monster is just better.

I dont experience alternator noise with EITHER methods of connection. However, using the Monster charger gives me MUCH improved sound.

Please perform the following test to assist me, if you would be so kind.

1. Plug in iPod normally, using charger and Aux Input.

2. Turn on iPod, and start playing a song.

3. Once song starts playing, press Pause on the iPod.

4. Turn on BMW radio, and tune into Aux Input.

5. With engine running, turn volume up to mid to high level.

6. Press gas pedal a few times, listening for alternator whine.

7. If noise is heard, disconnect the power supply from the iPod and attempt test again. Noise should go away when not charging.

Please report if you hear any whine when the music is off.

My suspicion is that you have alternator noise, but don't notice it because your music is overpowering it. This is what happens to mine. The problem for me is.... I listen to music that has long, sustained, quiet passages.... where the music doesn't always drown out the alternator whine.

Thanks in advance.
