Default Cupholder retrofit

My E60 didnt come with cupholder inside the dash which is very irratating as I am a big fan of coffee. Also driving in long distance without water is terrible. So i decided to retrofit the cupholder but shipping a whole dashboard over is troublesome. So is it possible to drill two holes in the dash and just fit the cupholder into it? I look at photos of the dash and it seems not havig any particular stuff to hold them in place.

Any ideas how to get it done?

??? why would you drill anything into the dash? If the cupholders are missing just replace the cupholders. do you have some version of the E60 that doesnt have provision for cupholders in the dash?

Yes you're right.

Mine is the Europe version without the pocket in the dash for the cupholder. That's why I thought if I just cut a hole in that place and put the OEM cupholder in. Any thought? Are there any special structure in the dash to hold the cupholder in place or it just hangs there by itself?

I would NOT destroy your dash for the sake of a cupholder!

Back when I had my E39, the "Ultimate Cupholder" was a popular product because of the terrible cupholders that came with that model. Someone has adapted that product for the E60, as can be seen in this thread.

You may want to consider doing something like that instead.

There is a retrofit kit for the cup holder if you want the oem look.

This is a good call. Is there some application for it to be around the center console? Hate reaching across my dash for the passenger one (assuming whatever place I grab drinks doesn't have any trays available).

Anyone experience with that retrofit cupholder? I look at the pic and am not sure if it can hold a grande Starbuck.

Well so it seems if I wanna go the OEM route, a new dashboard is the only way for the cupholder :-( I found one thread someone retrofit the X3 cupholder, interesting stuff but it doesnt give the flush install like the OEM.

This sounds like an epic 1st world problem.

Cutting up your dashboard is a TERRIBLE idea. If drinking coffee while you drive is THAT important to you, just buy a spill proof tumbler and you can keep it in your lap between sips or sit it in the passenger seat next to you. You're welcome.

you're in VN - hire someone to drive for you, so you can enjoy your coffee

seriously, don't hack up your dash, give this a try - BMW Cup Holders, Porsche Cup Holders, Ultimate Cup Holder - Cupholders / Drink Holders for BMW 3 5 7 Series, Boxster 911 Z4 Mercedes Audi NSX other fine cars.

or do what I do sometimes -

I flip down the rear center console and that has a cup holder that I can reach while sitting in the driver seat.

I usually do this since I don't trust certain people not to accidentally hit the front cup holders.
Seriously tho, the back seat ones are very close. I keep that arm rest down full time.
