I think gold rims would look good on a black or white e60. You have to complete the look though by dropping it really low and putting on a m-tech kit or something of the sort.
There are a lot of "current" cars that look good with gold wheels in my mind, you just have to do it right.

I wouldn't recommend gold rims on the E60. Its just not the style, it wouldn't look good in this sporty/luxurious sedan. But there are other cars that look very good with gold rims. At the end of the day, its still your car, so if you want to put gold rims, its your choice. Good luck with the decision.
