I have always replaced my factory headunits with aftermarket, and it always sounds much better/brighter/louder. It does not look like this will be possible with the E60 because of the idrive & screen. Anyone explore this before? How is the premium sound package?

It should be extremely difficult to do, but not impossible I'm sure. There are ways for the aftermarket audio companies to get creative, should be interesting. Plus where would you put the head unit?

The factory premium sound is good enough in my opinion. Use to be that the sound system was the first thing I would change in my ride when I was younger. I guess my taste in music has changed over the years. I could never imagine changing the sound system on my E60. Good luck.

it will be quite difficult to replace the stock cd player. What i am personally doing and reccomend to any of you guys, is the get the JL clean sweep, It will re-equalize your cd player so the signal is nice and flat. Hence, you will get a good output for an amplifier... Just amp your stock speakers... The Stock stereo is not bad, but not that good... I can live with it but like you more power and detail is needed..

Amping the system wont be hard, all the wiring would be in the rear... So it makes install of an amplifier easy, the hardest part would to run new speaker wires....

Possible, but a bit of work. I've done it. You need to take out the center dash trim, ditch the pocket hole, move the factory CD player down a DIN, and there will be JUST enough room above it to shove in a head unit (you'll have to fabricate your own mounting brackets). You also need to cut the AC controls trim piece on that line just below the controls. You also need to dremel down the metal bit on the top of the factory CD player, and drill some new screw holes in the lower metal bits. Then you need to fabricate new dash trim to go around this new setup (something I haven't gotten to yet).

No, that's my old system. My new system is the one with the head unit, I won't have pics for it for a little while (need to fabricate new dash trim - and once this is done it WON'T look like crap, it will look PIMP).

Re-using most of the equipment, but underneath the surface the install was done poorly and simply didn't provide enough flexibility (i.e. digital sound processor, etc.). This is why to get something done right the only way is to do it yourself.
