My Ride: On Order, due in May - 2007MY 530D SE, Silver Grey, Black Dakota, Auto, Brushed aluminium shadowline, sports seats / wheel, hi fi speakers, mats, space saver wheel and a few more bits
Default

Had my first reasonable distance (70 mile) trip today and was early for the meeting so decided to go at 60 mph and return flat out where possible (not over 130)

Result was 53.2 mpg there, 39 back

Previous to this a was average 33mpg on mainly short journeys

Bet the 520D does much better however I was pleasantly suprised bearing in mind the hp (and 590 Nm of torque)

Still - it's not the right way to drive such an entertaining beast

Standard 520d, not much better, if at all better. Just done a trip from Coventry to Bournemouth and back(150 miles each way). Journey down averaged 49.7 mpg, few +100mph bursts but mainly at 80 /90. On the way back had the climate control on and drove it pretty hard, averaged 46mpg. Wonder if a remap would improve the MPG. Also for any 520d owners with either flat spots at 2000 rpm or poor MPG get BMW to re-program your EGR valve, makes it a different car

On outward trip I was very carful and did not exceed 60 mph - painful really and kept mixing it with trucks driven by men bemused by my low speed

Think the re-map did improve things but it is all about smooth low speed driving. Also am using BP ULTIMATE diesel, definatly better than Shell (when you can find some)

Interesting. In my old (March '04, 218bhp) 530d auto, I can get 40mpg on a run, driving fairly carefully - I never tried driving at a steady 60mph though. Around town, especially on short journeys, it's down to 31/32mpg. So I average about 35mpg overall.

In never did get around do getting a re-map, and now I'm thinking of trading her in before 3yr warranty runs out in March 2007. Thinking of getting another 530d, but tempted by 535d or paerhaps even a 335d :-)

Slightly off-topic, but what are the Hi-Fi speakers like? Do you think they're worth having?
