Default Magnaflow cat-back exhaust for 550i

Has anyone here installed or have personally heard the Magnaflow cat-back exhaust (p/n 16559) on the 550? ...or for that matter even on 545 (p/n 16558)?

It seems that most people are either doing custom dual (i.e. quad tips) using Magnaflow parts or using the axle-back RPI, but I haven't heard of anyone going with the full Magnaflow cat-back. Any reason why? It costs about the same as RPI. The couple videos that I found from Magnaflow aren't very good quality so I couldn't really get an idea of the sound.

Yup, I've seen that clip before -- I think it's one of the nicest looking AND sounding ones out there! It's definitely music for the ears. But, I'm still searching for someone with firsthand experience with the Magnaflow cat-back system.

Magnaflow exhausts are a nice affordable choice for sound and performance when it comes to exhausts. The main complaint I've seen from people is the drone so keep that in mind.

Are you talking about just the muffler? I've seen posts about drone when fabricating custom setups, which is one reason why I'm interested in Magnaflow's complete cat-back setup. It actually has had some R&D and dyno time, as opposed to something just put together.

I don't know if it's crappy sound quality, but in the first video the exhaust sounds not much different from stock. In the second video, the growl is a bit more pronounced.

Not sure if they were talking about a full catback or just muffler install. I just remember hearing multiple complaints of droning at low RPM, maybe one of them will chime in. I've also heard the same issues with the RPI exhausts as well though, which is why they sell a silencer add-on to remove some droning.

My setup was the exact same as member "West" on here who actually dyno tested it and gained about 10whp so if power is a concern my "custom" setup has proven gains. It didn't come cheap though. I think I paid around $1200 for everything......this included all stainless steel tubing, mandrel bends, TIG welded and of course the tips and muffler.

Thanks for your input. I read the thread about West's setup and yours -- very nice work indeed. It's definitely good info if I ever decide to go that route. I'm hoping someone who's experienced the Magnaflow cat-back will chime in. I think member "gcvt" might actually have it installed.

I contacted "gcvt," who confirmed that he does in fact have the full cat-back Magnaflow 16559 on his 550!! I'm hoping that he will be able to post sound clips or at least pics of it installed. He said that it sounds nice.
