get the TOTAL history of the vehicle through BMW. There should be a comprehensive computer
sheet on everything that has been done to it. then make your decision. remember that these
are expensive vehicles to own.

well.....there are two ways to look at this....if it were an E39 then the high mileage wouldnt be a big issue, but then again the car would be half the price. many ppl buy the E39 M5 knowing that its older and are willing to do the work to keep it running....add to that you can get parts from all over. so if you want to look at it from that perspective, then i say its no biggie with all these miles.

but realistically....

anything breaks on the E60 M5 and its hella expensive to fix. there arent as many used parts out here to buy so that can mean buying the parts new....and not just the part u need but having to buy the whole assembly its attached to because thats the only way the dealer sells it.

with over 100k miles, from what i understand these are the following things that will need to be replaced soon:
clutch & fly wheel for certain
front and rear suspension components (since the M5 has EDC the shocks are like $1k each tower)
brakes - the rotors are very pricey both front and rear
SMG pump - especially the 06 and 07 model years are prone to SMG pump failures
VANOS - again the 06 and some 07 model years were more prone to VANOS issues

if it were me, i would look at buying an awesome E39 M5 before i touched a $20k E60 M5....all the items i mentioned above are a minimum of $2k + to fix....god forbid the entire trans or engine needs to be replaced. i did A LOT of research before i bought my M5....probably looked seriously for like 6 months before my car accident catapulted me into pulling the trigger. i nearly didnt buy a 06 or 07 for all the known issues....but found a deal i couldnt refuse i paid less than $32K for mine and it had 44k miles, a new clutch and flywheel the day i bought her from a large/reputable BMW franchised dealer.

post a thread over on M5board.com but im sure they will drop u the same warnings. the 2006 isnt something you have to stay away from....but with over 100k miles...how many more miles do you think she will have in her before the items above will need replacing? my guess is 10k maybe 20k if ur lucky...

if its already had a clutch and smg pump replaced, it may make it a better buy. check the service records like mentioned above, and see what all what done to it.

bmw service wont usually release service records due to privacy issues, but they may tell you on the phone what was done to it.

I just saw one locally for $25k for 120k miles. No way I would touch it, if I'm buying one it needs to be below 35k/40 miles

If they will part with that kind of performance for that small a sum, there MUST be a good reason!

I think it probably depends. A 2006 with 35K miles on it would probably run $35K or so (just a guess there). So, if you could get these guys down, to say, $21K (I'm sure there is some room for negotiations), and if you checked the service records, and no red flags, then you could save the $14K, and if a pump does go out, you could have money to fix it. I haven't heard of a lot of engines blowing, but it does have 111k miles, so you never know. I bought my 2007 with 80K miles on it, have put about 10K on it, and so far, no big issues, but you just never know. I wouldn't discount it completely, but would find out more about it. Just realize, if you do have an issue, it will cost you. Also, almost impossible (or impractical) to get a third-party warranty on it with those miles.

Good luck.

tempting.... as others have said.. check the service records. HOWEVER, they must remove that decal on the trunk lid. I cannot believe they did that..... CHEEEEESE
