I dont have M5 but as far as i know you will get the full 507bhp instead of 400bhp and the throttle response and exhaust tone will be changed as well.
I am sure the M5 owner can explain this to you with more details

The M button allows you to program hundreds of different options into that one setting which will all be activated once you hit that button on the steering wheel. The program options are accessed through iDrive and from there you can select settings for Power (P400, P500, P500S), shift options (S1-S6), Traction control, EDC (Electronic Damping Control), Multi-function seat adjustability...etc... IIRC, I believe it comes to about 279 different combinations. Of course, you also can individually select settings for each of these by pushing dedicated buttons for those features.

Most people would set it to the max settings such as P500S, S6, DSC Off, EDC Sport..etc..

Once you push the "M" button if you have your settings on S6, DSC off, EDC sport, P500sport, the car turns wicked and evil. It goes from respectable BMW for the refined gentleman to a dirty filthy evil speeding whore.

Wow! I'm pretty ignorant regarding the M5 details... didn't realize this feature's available. Makes my 545i seem lame.

dosent make your 545 lame at all. Think of it as the M5's brother...or as your M5 warm up.
