This is only the second time I've ever heard of an M5 being stolen. Countermeasures are pretty good on these cars. Only other time is the thief likely had a illicit copy of the key. How did they just 'drive off' with your brother's car???

Those thieves are less "brave" as they are arrogant. They know they won't encounter much in terms of resistance over there in GB. I second a more clever location for the keys. As for the spares, A built-in household safe has become more and more popular the past few years for everything else...
Otherwise,

Bummer it's so restricted over there.

I think this is the first stolen E60 I've heard of since I joined this forum. That blows! Hopefully it wasn't damaged too much. Why can't thieves be a bit more respectful of the cars they steal!
They always manage to bash them up.

I am sorry and it upsets me to hear this at the same time. Glad to hear they found you car.
But I believe we all agree that I would wish I caught them doing it, just so I could shoot 'em in the face. Sorry to blow off steam like that, but this kind of crap really irritates me. That is why I keep my cars personal bodyguards, (120lb. pit bull and 135lb. bullmastiff) on deck 24 hours a day.
Tell your brother to keep his head up.

Too bad, seems that these guys where just wanting to have some fun with someone else?s property.
On the mainland we have to deal more with organized gangs from Eastern Europe, the BMW X5 4.4i of a friend of mine once got jacked. They seemed to have observed his house, when he went away on holiday the caretaker did some groceries, and in just half an hour they broke into his home and jacked the keys and cars.
All that ever was recovered was a credit card that was in the car.
I agree with some people here, thieves know that they will not encounter much resistance, so they run a low risk of getting caught. Police will never be able to offer that much protection as a personal sidearm can, but hell, even if you shoot a thief you will be arrested yourself (happened here in Holland a couple of times).
Anyway, good luck to your brother, if I where him I would consider selling the car and get something else.

And then what?
The judge says they are very naughty and should not do that again, sends them away with some kind of community service.
