Track Day in M5

My Ride: Black E60 M5
Ladies and Gents,
I'm looking to book up my first track day in the M5 and was wonder what inputs other owners have experienced. I've taken my previous cars and weight is a massive handicap.
I've been a passenger in my friends 530 E60 and wasn't impressed with the gearbox (kept shifting up at high revs) and traction control had to be on all the time as the suspension and weight really made it slide around. Hopefully the M5 should do better.
I know its not going to nimble as other cars and I'll spend my time sliding my tyres to an early grave. If you tracked your M5 recently I'll appreciate your experience.

Ive not tracked mine as it is quite a new M5 but beleive me the 530 is not a patch on the M5 in any shape or form.
I have been driven around a track with a qualified driver and I thought I was a bit of a nut case at 50 years old, but he was in sane, you cannot beleive how powerfull the car is and it sticks to the road like s... to a blanket, you will have the time of your life.
As you know DMS has just remapped mine and although I havnt had the chance to fully test it out on our normal roads the way it goes throgh the gears is fantastic, wish I was going around a track again, dare not take mine in case I loose it and crash!!

the M should be WAY better than the 530, what with it's M suspension set up, M diff, wider tyres etc..
and our SMG gearbox doesn't auto up change (only down), as i'm sure you already know.
keep traction on for a few laps. when you have got a few laps under your belt, maybe take the TC off.

; same thing after track sessions at Infineon and Laguna Seca.The M5 is a great handling, and incredibly nimble 2-ton power machine. Obviously not as nimble through the tight corners as a lighter car, but none-the-less it's no slouch on the track and accelerating out of the corners and down the straights is pretty darn fun. I HIGHLY recommend it. In fact I've already signed up for another session later this year at Infenion.

Trackday insurance should be under ?100 with a 10%+ excess (it was with my last car anyway)
My old insurance company did have a clause where I was covered on private land as long as I was not involved in competitive driving (recrding times or places) which was good. I did check with them and they said it was ok. Now insurance companies have wised up and some explicitly state no "Nurburgring"
You should try a trackday in any car. You'll find you are a lot more confident and aware of road conditions afterwards.

i was with Direct Line. I moved to Admiral as their premium was ?100 better and they would use my NCB on my other car. i asked them about tracking, and they said they wont offer any cover.
couple of other questions to go with that; what is your age and premium? don't answer if you don't want the world to know. i'm 32 and pay ?930 premium for the M.

I was insured with nationwide at the time. Now I'm with elephant on my wife's NCB of 5 years (currently sharing 1 car) paying ?830 for the year.
Shame Nationwide are no longer pushing their insurance products any more. As one year when they had that ridiculous offer of doubling the difference of equivalent quote. I insured my brand new Evo for ?150!
For the track I would go to the specialist brokers for day cover if you want that piece of mind.
