...I take it 48k is too much? lol

Dont look now, but they just posted another 06 for almost 53k - about 27k miles. This is the best part - ITS A CPO!!!! He JUST told me that they NEVER certify M's! WTF?!

The story is that for a while BMW was not certifying the V10 cars. I don't know when that changed, but yes now you can buy a CPO M5/M6.

I tried to sell my car several months ago when the mileage was in the low 40k range. The highest offer I got was in the low 40s, and that was tentative at best. I didn't even try to pursue it. I said shit for that kind of money I'll keep it. Now it's got 49,5xx miles—within spitting distance of no more warranty—so I'm probably into the $30s now.

So yes, if someone offered me $48k it would be GONE!

I looooooooooooooove the car. But I paid $60k for it less than a year ago. The price I paid was not out of line from the market, but DAMN that hurt.

They had a CPO'ed one in FL for 44k with 42k miles. Also you CAN get maint as WELL as a extended warranty through BMW as long as the car is currently under warranty. I am still waiting from my dealer for a price. Lot of wrong info out about these cars.

If a dealer will not CPO a car it's due to cost not because they cant. Also run a carfax, I find alots of 2006's with 3 owners on them or bodywork done in the 42-44k price range.

P.S. dont talk to the sales retards about warranty, talk to the finance people.
Some cars can't be CPOed because they don't meet the initial guidelines. I.e., there is a certain threshold for body damage in the car's history that after a certain point the car is not eligible to be certified. At least that is the way it was when I worked for Porsche/Audi, so I presume BMW is the same way.

Since it looks like you're going to keep your car now, you should definitely go get the extended warranty and extended maint before you hit 50K miles.

I've done a lot of research on the options there and the general consensus seems to be that 1) the extended warranty through BMW is only available to the original owner, which I am not; and 2) extended maintenance is not available on the E60 M5. Does anyone know for sure otherwise?

As for aftermarket, I think I was looking at $4-5k for a decent warranty, which I really just can't justify in this economy. I just don't have that kind of money to toss at this car right now.

We were just discussing this on this thread: http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=70997&st=0

and on this one from m5board: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60-m5-e6...ty-wording.html

You can get an extended warranty and extended maint plan even if you're not the original owner. I got a quote from my local dealer already but may shop around a bit.

Good looking car but I don't like gallery! I had one hell of an experience with my wife's 7 in their body shop and have heard rumblings from others. Are they your current dealer? It's not the sales dept. but I'm still just bitter. Seems like the sales dept doesn't know what their talking about either though with the CPO vs. non-CPO'ing M's.

Good luck and let us know how you make out. Keep an eye out for a spring meet!!! We need to keep up with the Cali guys.

Thanks for the replies...

So, what should I expect to pay for a preowned M5, either an 06 or 07? I thought 48 to 53 was about right...but seems like most thought that was too high?

I hate the car buying process!

Last time I checked auction prices, the 07s were in mid to low 40s, and 06 from the low 30s (!!!!) to mid 40s (probably in CA somewhere). Those are without auction fees, and any repairs/costs it takes the dealer, and any markup the dealer pays a wholesaler if that's the source of the car, so figure that you could add between $1-4k to those numbers for a reasonable price to buy it from a dealer. That would put $1-2k in the dealer's pocket. And I don't care how much the dealer says they want, I just left the car industry because it is so f'in bad. Right now, every dealer I knew would be THRILLED with a 1-2k deal, so drive a hard bargain.

Have the car checked for a proper PPI also.
