I just recently purchase a 2006 M5 with 79000kms, build date is 2006/05/05......I'm new to the BMW world, and I'm a former Audi owner. I'm familiar with the DSG in my previous Audi's and how they can be a bit temperamental at times, but theses SMG's are violent and not sophisticated at all...is it normal at regular driving conditions...ie stop and go to have this thing clunk sometimes when it engages gears or should I have mine looked at...otherwise...I love my ride....its a "sophisticated beast"

SMG is different from the DSG ( smoother shifting than the SMG, DSG is more comparable to DCT on newer M3's and the F10 M5 ) especially stop and go traffic , SMG you have to learn the characteristics and the shift points after awhile you'll get the hang of it and what not and you'll enjoy it better..Wide open throttle is just amazing! hope this helps

I had a SMG2 E46 M3 and now an SMG3 E60 M5. Unfortunately the SMG3 is already an improvement over the previous but it is still a pain to drive in traffic/low speed situations and you really have to learn how to drive it smoothly. It does shine when you can go fast!

Thanks guys for the info....was at BMW today getting some oil, and the techs told me the same as you guys did, verbatim. Just hate the clunk at low speeds from a stop....errr....but at WOT it all goes away !!
