First post here, been an M5 fan for years and now finally close to having the ability to get one, however there are a couple of things I want to run through you more experienced guys.

1) How can I get a 'proper' test drive?
Im 24 and most dealerships I goto don't really want to offer a drive unless Im within a few days of buying the car, Id most likely want to get one in Feb next year but between now and then want to be sure its the car for me (only thing to feel is performance and handling) and then keep an eye out for a decent 2nd hand one and be ready to commit if something good comes along. Ideally want to spend 30 mins with the car to get a feel for M power as Ive never sat in anything remotely quick.

2) Are second hand M5s just trouble?
Who buys an M5, puts 4k on the clock and sells it again, haven't they just ripped the engine ? Am I asking for trouble buying one of these? Seen a number of second hand M5s w/ decent spec around new 60k and am curious to know what type of useage the first guy would have put on it. Is the fll checkup that BMW do on all second hand cars really that good ? Should I get extended warranty thrown in?

3) How can I pick up a good ex-demo M5 ?
Do I have to phone around all the dealerships to ask? Any other way? I'd love to get a really high spec, but not all the second hand ones have options I like, if I find a decent 2nd hand one, can I usually ask dealers to throw in extras? What sort of margin to they make on 2nd hand cars, is asking for 10% discount too much??

...lot of questions I know, but any thoughts appreciated ... thx

It's simple, to be shure, buy one where the guarantee is not expired yet. If the engine is bad, you can repair it for free.

Here in europe, we have something like "Dekra" this is a chain of specialists that check your car completely for prices between 100 and 220 euro. They will check everything including the thickness of the paint to see if it was in an accident. Also the compression of the cylinders will be checked, and with a stetoscope they will check for ticking valves/ worn pistons etc.

Its worth the money.

second hand M5 - especialy a demo car is a total NO NO NO NO

put it this way.... go somewhere to a dealer for a whole day and watch all the people test driving the M5 and HOW they drive it.... perhaps you should go have a ride with few of those..... now multiple this by 100x and you will get the result......

especially THE EMMY... that needs a proper and precise break in period etc etc....... cold starts and immediate heavy foot kills the car as well, which is pretty much what is done to a demo car all the time....

no way man..... you do not buy second hand super sports, especially demos or promo cars.

and your 3rd question.... do you really think they would tell you if there was something wrong with the car? if it was dinged or runed over pot holes a few times????? do not be naive...... they will say it is the best M5 ever as long as you show interest to buy

where are you from ?

in Europe every other BMW dealer has one M5 available on stock.... or can find one quick
you might just have to sacrifise some options or color you would order otherwise

oh good think you are in Europe.... the bad part is that you need right hand drive car.... that is where the long waiting comes.....
germany is full of the left handed ones....

Hi-rev engine, of course, works harder than normal rev engine. Expect the life would be shorter.
Think for a moment about F1 engine. How long does it last? It revs somewhere near 18000 rpm. Its life is significant shorter than car with revs some where near 3000 rpm max for daily driving. In otherwords, just for a rule of thumb, 10000-mile M5 equivalent to 15000-mile non-M5 BMW. I can be wrong, but it's my rule of thumb.

I've no issue with my 2nd hand M5. I know it was correctly run in & had it's 1200 mile service & it only ever went out on demo to those specifically interested in M5's as they would never let any Tom, Dick or Harry roll into the dealership & take the M5 for a test drive.

I'd be far more cautious about a private sale of a low mileage M5 rather than a dealer example. Mine was owned by the MD of a BMW dealer & as such was his personal car, however i'm sure a few others did get to drive it, although none of the staff were allowed to drive it. I was only allowed to test drive the car AFTER i'd paid a fairly substantial deposit.

It gets you a car straight away woth a significant discount & loads options, so i'm happy & the car still has just over 2 years mfctrs warranty so no worries their.
