My Ride: Current: 2005 M3 (for sale)
Coming soon: 2008 550i Sport - Carbon Black on Black (loaded)
Hey, I'm a newbie here from Cincinnati and need some advice out of the gate. I've had numerous BMW's but the most recent 3 are as follows:
- e39 540i w/ sport package, an e60 530i, and an e46 M3 (current car) - all manual trannys which is key for me.
The kids are getting bigger so I need 4 doors again (but something bigger than the M3 sedan)...here is what I'm considering and am very torn...any advice would be appreciated:
- 2008 M5 (CPO)
- F10 535i with M sport package, etc.
- F10 550i with M sport package, etc.
A couple thoughts...drove the F10 535i and liked it...wasn't as sluggish as I expected it to be. The F10 550i was definitely powerful enough but has a price tag of $73K. I can get a low mileage, CPO'd 2008 M5 for $52K, and the 535i with Sport/Premium2, etc. for $66K.
I was leaning towards the F10 options as I like the new body style, but the more I read threads from the M5 fanatics, I'm not so sure. Problem is, I've never driven the e60 M5. Between the gas mileage, insurance costs, etc., not sure if I want to go that route...but it would be an easier transition power-wise from the M3.
I know by posting on the M5 board the responses may be a bit biased, but wasn't sure where to go with this one.
Sorry for the long-winded request...thanks in advance.

For the money, go for the 2008 M5, there's nothing else like it. I'll always love the E60 M5.

My Ride: 2008 550I LOADED, all options except HUD and NV
In terms of practicality the F10 550 is comparable to your current M3 (one ECU tune and you're in the 500HP range).
In terms of fun factor, nothing beats the M5, period. That said I wouldn't get a CPO M5, or turn down the CPO warranty - it really doesn't cover much. Rather get an E60 M5 with a good 3rd party warranty that covers MUCH more than the CPO does, typically bumper to bumper.
