I was wondering if the 550 is worth the extra bucks? What kind of performance does the 550 have? I am going to test drive one today. Any ifo would be great.

Yes, it would be worth the extra to me. I expect magazine 0-60 of about 5.1 and 1/4 of about 13.4.

I got my 2006 550i three days ago. I honestly did not drive a 535, but did try the M5 on for size. The M5 was my first choice. I have gotten to a point in life where I prefer to pay cash for items and did not want to wait another 6 mos to get the extra 25K to pay for the M5. There was also an issue with insurance and tags, you know. Usuall stuff. The 550 is just fine. I have no idea how quick it is, but it is quick. I have 300 miles on it and am currently seasoning the block. I am a little let down by the SMg having only a "sport" mode that is not adjustable and a regular mode. The shifts are crisp with "sport", but definitely not as crisp as the M5 which was just absolutely an awesome drive. I felt the M5 was quicker than my old Z06 and apparently it was good for 12.4 qtr miles. I feel like the 550i is good for 13.3-13.5, but have not checked it yet. Anyway. I hope my rambling helps.

The 550 is quick! My previous car was an e46 M3, and once I got the runflats off my 550 I have to say I like this car better. And the torque /lb is about the same as the e60 M5, more than the e39M5. The touring range far exceeds the M5, and this is one comfortable automobile as a daily driver.

There is no doubt the the 550i is worth the extra bucks for the extra power. But, that's just me; I like V-8's, and would not be without one. The 550i probably will do lowish 5's to 60 and mid to lowish 1/4 ET's.

I am surprised to hear you say that. I think even the "old" ZO6 is more than a match for the M5.

That may be. My point being My 405 hp Z06 was a 3200 lbd fiberglass two seater as oposed to the M5 which I bet is 4000 lbs or better. The 10 miles I got to put on the one I drove felt great. Without a timer, the car's acceleration was phenomenal and I was going by seat of the pants guestimate on my speed prediction. In the real world on real streets without dragslicks the 0.1 sec difference in times is just not a difference. The M5 has an advantage if anything because at least with SMG the shift times are consistant with every shift. I can't comment on handling other to say it was fine for what I was doing (onramp turns at 60mph, etc.) But again, this is just my opinion. Again, I opted for the 550i. M5 is a great ride is my only point if you can get one.
