I don't have a M5 but know that M cars are oil-drinkers. BMW UK state 1 litre of oil every few thousand miles is perfectly acceptable, more if you like to the car

M5's use oil, typical is a liter every few thousand miles, depending on how hard you drive. In addition, there have been some problems with the oil sensor readings. Your situation sounds quite normal though, I wouldn't worry at this point. Read the manual carefully about adding oil, and follow the directions. The oil gage will take some time to give you a reading, and it's not terribly accurate. The main thing to keep in mind is DO NOT overfill. If you have any question, take the car into the dealer before adding oil.

One question: what are the consequences if you overfill with oil a high revvy engine like the m5's?

I'm not an expert, but I would imagine you could blow a seal somewhere.

Basically, if your car says to add oil, then add 1 liter. Typically this happens when the oil level reaches .2L or below. Once you've added the liter, DO NOT add more if the gage doesn't register the added liter. People have done this, only to find out that they've overfilled it when the gage finally registers the next day. If it continues to tell you to add oil, then I'd call the dealer.

I don't have a M5 but my 523i need to add oil already at 7000km. The dealer told me is perfectly normal and a M5 takes more oil than my 523i so there you go.

My car has consumed 8 litres of oil in 24,500 km (yes 1 litre of oil every 3,000 km), and BMW is claiming that this is absolutely normal . I don't know what to say, but I guess you should expect your M engine to consume more than my humble 520i, but again it all depends on your driving style.
