Fuel prices are only going up.... so if you can.... Just get the M, and enjoy it while it lasts.

I wonder if the next M5 will be as much of a gas guzzler? I think by the time the next M5 would be arriving, the world oil situation might be very different than today... which could possibly affect car design. I mean.... imagine if gasoline cost twice what it does now? Could BMW honestly still build a car with such low mileage?

Maybe a hydrogen M? I know BMW has the technology for that..... but I'm sure the world won't have the infrastructure to support it yet. (ie fuel stations with H2)

You know that's by far not a solution. Any kind of forced induction won't drop too much, or in most of the cases even raise the fuel consumption cuz after all, this method forces more air into the cylinders so that more fuel can be burned. Turbocharging is in a way "free energy" because it runs on the exhaust gases, but that is in the meaning that no other enerrgy parts from the engine are spent to run the turbocharger, vice-versa the supercharges wich is belt driven and needs a % of the engine output to run it. The bigger it is the more it needs. (eg: Merc SLR wich it's supercharger needs 120bhp from the engine just to run it ). But in general that by far a good method to drop fuel consumption.

That's a good point. The oil situation as you mentioned in the future for sure will be a disaster (as in fuel cost at the pump). That and combined with the permanent battle of hp, wich as we can see, it hasn't droped too much, even though fuel prices have doubled from 1999 or so, engine hp has gone up, best example the E39 and E60 m5, and that means higher fuel consumption. And there is a battle between constructors, like mercedes audi and so on. That being the case i really fear for the future of super sedans/sports cars.
