Hey guys, I read on some forums that there is a launch control feature, where you hold down the downshift paddle etc...

I tried doing this (with the DSC off, shift speed in position 6 etc..) but no luck.
Does this exist on the Canadian or US models?

Thanks,
Ant

Yes, but it's been crippled on purpose unlike the European M5s which have the fully functional launch control. For more info go to M5board.com.

Euro "Launch Control" (clutch drop at 4000RPM's with auto shift at redline) is not available from the factory with this option in the US or Canada. All we get is the 'crippled' version that drops the clutch around 1200RPM's without auto shift at redline. HOWEVER, Turner Motorsports in Massachusettes revealed to us that they can outfit any E60 M5 with Euro LC by doing a hardware/software upgrade for around $6K (I think...). Haven't been any takers on the M5Board that I'm aware of....yet. Care to be the first one?

You know what's interesting is that with the 545/550 SMG, the launch control is exactly like you described for the European M5. Revs to 4000 rpms, dumps the clutch, and automatic shifting.

Perhaps, what's involved in this upgrade?
However more interestingly, how do I perform the 1200 RPM launch?? I can't even seem to do that...
What's the 'proper' procedure?

Thanks,
Ant

Probably due to the fact that the drivetrain can withstand repeated beatings with 360 hp/360lb/ft torque vs. 500 hp/383lb/ft.

Here's a link to info on the TMS upgrade

As for our 'crippled' LC: S6 (DSC off), p500S. Level surface, wheels pointing FORWARD, shifter pushed forward (YOU CANNOT INITIATE LAUNCH WITH THE PADDLES!), pedal quickly to the floor past the kickdown position, wait till revs peak, release the lever--->wheels spin, tires smoke, start laughing like little schoolgirl.

After have done a few launches, I've learned that you need to wait at least 5 minutes before attempting another. I have had the launch control disabled after attempting consecutive launches with minimal recovery. The dealership had to reactivate the launch control. I'm sure it's the same way with the M5.

Yes the M5 needs to "refresh" too. Also the LC is unlocked only after the first 2.100 km.

One thing we get here in the USA that apparently doesn't work on the Euro version is an "emergency launch" or what I call a "drop clutch start." Basically, the clutch doesn't fully engage until about 7-9mph. If you push the accelerator all the way through the kick-down from a stop, it will rev up to about 3-4k rpm and drop the clutch. Do this with EDC Off, S-6 and you'll never gain traction until you shift. Do it in S-5, and you'll actually get a reasonably controllable launch, although you will probably still have to modulate the throttle to get a smooth and fast start from the line. It's kind of fun doing this from a slow rolling stop, at about 3-4mph if you push it to the kick-down, you'll get a more reasonable rev-up and clutch drop that is very controllable and minimal tire spin.

Don't try any of this with MDM or DSC On...you'll just go bunny hopping until you let off.

Hi everyonne,
Just experienced neck breaking shifting for the first time today....I just had my 1200mi service today and all I can say is WOW!!

Does anyone know of any good strips of road in OC and/or Huntington Beach to use launch control and to really push this beast?

thanks
