quite lucky...?

He was amazingly lucky. Not the case for the poor car though
Well, amazingly lucky might not actually be the case. There have been loads of accidents in which cars of this class (5-series, A6) have been involved in serious accidents. But still people manage to get out of it with minor injuries often. So I guess that cars are safer nowadays instead of relying on luck solely.

Somewhere there had been a thread (not this board) about an Audi A6 Avant which crashed head-on on the German Autobahn with a ghostdriver (driving an old Volkswagen Passat). That Passat was totally destroyed, and the driver killed right away. However, the two people driving in the Audi A6 only had minor injuries. Just a couple of years ago such a crash would have been fatal for everyone involved.

There have been loads of examples on the net with heavily smashed cars, but I think that cars in this class are just very safe, instead of the drivers having that much luck.

Still a pity about the car though.
