Alex if your that concerned about fuel consumption then the M5 is obviously not for you. If i was worried about how often i would fill up or how much it would cost, i would have gone the cheaper route and purchased a V8 like you did.

An M5 is like a nice pair of shoes. if price and function were your only concern then yes you can bargain shop. but if your craving and or used to luxury and refinement then buying a nice pair of shoes dosent seem like a big deal. if you like just any shoe then buy it. but if you prefer a nice gucci or prada shoe then go with that. to each his own. you like your 545 and we like our M5's

With over 65,000 miles on my car, I've done quite a few highway trips. At 85-90 mph steady speed, and tires properly inflated, you should get just over 18 mpg on the highway. You can get close to 20 mpg (19.7 mpg was my best with, and without the diff).
8 km/l (20 mpg) paying attention, ok

If they made the 7th gear longer, even the M5 would have had a good consumption . It's a shame .

Thanks again for your report

It was a technical curiosity .
My conclusion is that if the M5 has a Ferrari consumption, then it should have a Ferrari tank (95 litres/24 gallons) .
I would like to have 90 litres too . Someone should try to retrofit the 7er tank

In the past, BMW offered the "Bigger tank" option .

5 kml or 20 l /100 km . 12 MPG US . Crazy

500 km/300 miles with a tank if you go at 110 kmh/70 MPH .
At 110 kmh/70 MPH the 545i does 850 km .

With the 545i you can travel for 630 km at 145 kmh/90 MPH .

So I wasn't so stupid when I wrote my messages to support the V8 .

The only way to justify those consumptions/low range is making some mods and think "I have 550-600 HP, my car is faster than a Ferrari" .

I was asking because Italy is 2000 km long, so during the summer many people go down for 1000-1500 km and with 400 km range you would pass more time at the gas station that on the highway .
The same if you want to go around in Europe .

No way to retrofit the 7er tank ?
88 litres/22 gallons would be better .

Thanks West!
I'm almost want to call BS travelling 90mph and getting 391 miles in a 545!! I have a 335 which has a more efficient engine than your V8 and cruising @ 70 mph I went about 350 ish miles. your gas tank is only 2 gallons bigger than mine, so I'm finding how it impossible that your car is going 20 miles faster and gets almost 40 miles more. If you said 70 mph then I wouldn't even doubt it but @ 90 mph ummhhh

We all know that an M5 is not bought for gas mileage. But I have a question for you about the above figures.

850 km's = 528.16 miles with an eighteen gallon gas tank that would be 29.34 mpg @ 110 kmh or 68.35 mph
630 km's = 391.46 miles as stated above that would be 21.7 mpg @ 145 kmh or 90.09 mph

From the following webpages the typical range for a 2004 545i would be around 414 miles at posted speed limits
how do manage to get a extra 114.16 mile out of a tank of gas? (528.14 - 414 = 114.16) at 70 mph

Just want to know how you get the performance you have + the great gas mileage. My 530 was good at the pump, 550 not so good
and the M5 - just one hell of a car to drive!

Thanks for your posts, always enjoy reading them.

I drove on the highway (about 240km) each way to a nearby city.
Having read this thread, the only part i really picked up on was that the "nearby city" was 145 miles away, those M5's must make the world, as a driver really small!!! Either that or they're so much fun to drive you're willing to go the extra mile.
