I have a question, M5 owners.

During last days I saw an episode of Top Gear for the second time and I noted that man passed in a fuel station and the consumption was .. bad . I don't remember exactly, but it was something like <7 km with a litre | 15 l/100 km (17 MPG US) .

The question is :
you have to travel on the highway for .. 300 miles . You set the cruise control at 90 MPH .
Which will be the real consumption ?
Can you complete the 300 miles trip with only a tank or do you need to stop to fill up ?

And at 90 MPH, how many rpm the engine does, in 7th gear ?
About 3000-3200 I think, right ?

I would like to understand if it's true the M5 is so thirsty as I heard, especially compared to the V8 that is so good on all aspects .

nobody is probably responding because they've seen your past negative attitude towards the M5 in your preivious posts concerning the car. So with that being said maybe no on wants to hear your negative comments because they are sick of you

It's only a technical question, I don't want the infos to blame the car . I'm serious now .

And I was just asking if an M5 can travel for 500 km (300 miles) or not . I can say the V8 needs to refill every 700 km (440 miles) .

No, you have the right person.

It's no secret that Alex believes the 545/550 to be the more logical choice for everyday use. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

Hey Alex, what type of driving did that person do on the show to get 17mpg? My regular city driving which is mostly in traffic, gets me only 10.5mpg.

That said, I have heard others who have gone on long trips and have averaged close to 20mpg so I think it's definitely possible to go 300 miles on a full tank of gas. But it may also depend on the speed. I would think at 90mph, fuel consumption would be higher than let's say 70mph.

Exactly .

Highway, I think . I am searching for the vid on YT but I can't find it .

4.2 km/l , it's right .

Thanks.
Can you get a look to the secret men? at 90 MPH with cruise control on, next time you will go on the highway ?
I'm sure the result will be similar to 18 MPG .
80 and 90, if you can .

PS :
Do you mean 300 miles from a full tank to when the light came on or to a completely dry tank?

I really depends how you drive it. Here is my non scientific observation this weekend. I drove on the highway (about 240km) each way to a nearby city. On the way there I drove between 150 - 160 kph and used 3/4 tank of fuel. On the way back I drove about 110 kpm (I was dark and I was tired). I used 1/2 tank of fuel. That's a big variation.

5 kml or 20 l /100 km . 12 MPG US . Crazy

500 km/300 miles with a tank if you go at 110 kmh/70 MPH .
At 110 kmh/70 MPH the 545i does 850 km .

With the 545i you can travel for 630 km at 145 kmh/90 MPH .

So I wasn't so stupid when I wrote my messages to support the V8 .

The only way to justify those consumptions/low range is making some mods and think "I have 550-600 HP, my car is faster than a Ferrari" .

I was asking because Italy is 2000 km long, so during the summer many people go down for 1000-1500 km and with 400 km range you would pass more time at the gas station that on the highway .
The same if you want to go around in Europe .

No way to retrofit the 7er tank ?
88 litres/22 gallons would be better .

Thanks West!

With over 65,000 miles on my car, I've done quite a few highway trips. At 85-90 mph steady speed, and tires properly inflated, you should get just over 18 mpg on the highway. You can get close to 20 mpg (19.7 mpg was my best with, and without the diff). With the 3.91 diff, I would get just below 18 mpg on a typical hwy trip averaging 85 mph. One way to do a quick check is to use your trip computer to give you 'instantaneous' mileage.
