My Ride: E60 M5 Black/Black/Silver trim. Idrive, navigation, Active Seats, HUD, SMG, that plastic Key... and every option except the Active Cruise Control. I asked for everything and dealer forgot Active Cruise.....

Last weekend, I was killed by E55AMG tuned car on a drag race(street). I am not sure of exact tuning specification of the E55 but, he definitely had a exhaust and he claimed his car was de-limited. I got overly upset over the loss and I am now looking for my options. I know it sounds childish but thats the way it was that day.
My budget is about $5000 for exhaust and ECU. What can I get and how much improvement can I expect from it?

Let me know....

That car has some mad torque compared to ours. At stock, it's 469 HP, 516 ftlb torque and is already quicker than the M5, so imagine what it was tuned? It's no surprise you got beat by that ride. Many of newer AMG Mercs are fire-breathing beasts!

Just remember....some AMG's might be faster, but see if they'll keep up with you through the twisties.

In a typical street race, the E55 will usually win due to it's torque advantage. At most you'll get up to near 100 mph where the E55 will still be ahead, but once you approach 120 or so the M5 will/should reel in the E55 and eventually pass it at 150+. M5's are not geared for stoplight to stoplight races. Most M5 owners are aware of this and usually challenge the E55 from a roll where the M5's superior gearing will win out, but once again only at 120 - 150+.

To help out with the torque disadvantage, you can get the 3.91 differential. Exhaust is not going to be much of a difference maker unless you get a headers-back exhaust system. ECU tune will only help so much as well. To reiterate, challenge the E55 from a roll and make sure you are in the "meat" of your powerband. Be safe.

If you want more torque and a faster hole shot, you need gearing. Put taller gears in and you will be able to smoke that cat from the line.

I'm sure you meant to say 'shorter' gears, right? The 3.91 is a shorter final drive ratio than the stock 3.62 final drive. An example of a 'taller' final drive is the 2.93 found in the manual transmission V8s.

A shorter gear ratio will rotate more at a given engine speed (rpm) and a taller gear ratio rotates less. Think of it this way... It's ideal to use 1st gear (a shorter ratio) to accelerate from a stop than using 7th (a taller ratio).
