I LOVE the fact that for most of the threads here, the solution to most problems is "GET THE M5"!!!
Yeah, I fell for that one.

As for the deals to be had, just as an example, I got my current 550i for 13% off sticker. My M5 I got at 11% off sticker.

I am sure you can get an '08 M5 closer to 15% or more off sticker at this point...most have been sitting on lots for well over 12 months. I say this all the time, but my current dealership still has a black 6-sp on the lot that's been there since Aug of 2007.

You can get for less than invoice for sure. BMW has a 2% holdback, even though they won't admit it, and most places are willing to take a loss just to move them off their lots.

Actually after driving the car and putting some thought into it I've decided to stay with my 545i. I found the M5 too much of a compromise. My 545 with sport package has boatloads of performance and is comfortable for daily commuting. Too much of the 11/10ths engineering and performance of the M5 is geared towards track and magazine testing and not enough for the real world in my opinion. Much thanks for the input.

M cars are not great commuter vehicles. Very hard edged. I had an M3 that was a blast on nice days with light traffic. On a Monday morning commute... not so much

And I think the E60 M5 is more of a beast than my old E46 M3. My .02

Look at it another way - Getting the M5 is the cheapest way of getting M5 mirrors, M5 body kit, M5 pedals, M5 entry strips, M5 seats, M5 interior, M5 Steering wheel.....
v10 too

My Ride: 2004 545i - Bone stock... help!

Ya know, I love the M5 and the performance that it's capable of but the complaints of it as a daily driver are one of the major reasons I've really taken a good hard look at the Alpina B5/S cars as my next logical step. It has the 500+HP on tap, has the great performance numbers, but also really settles in like a kitten for the daily drive. It's IMO the best of both worlds in a truer sense than the 550 with sports package, know what I mean?

The numbers on the Alpina are staggering, and the ride and comfort are just as good, if not better, than your non-M e60. I'm really in love with those cars, and it will be my next step at some point. (Needs better wheels IMO though)

Just my .02
