I don't recall what year (or what decade) the paint on new cars started looking like various colored ORANGE PEEL. Re-noticed this when having my M5 serviced at the local dealership recently. It's a shame (sham) to see a new $100000+ car with such a junky paint job.

I noticed it on a new 650 in the showroom - same thing (to a lesser degree, I think) on my '08 M5

I remember reading about a new (a while back) water based auto paint - wonder if that's it..?

An easy fix is a professional color sanding and polishing...

that's good to know - but shouldn't that have been taken care of by (in this case) BMW before sending the car(s) out and making it necessary for a professional to rectify ?

(I can't get enough of seeing what you've done to that beautiful Yellow car Gelp, gulp)

but that leads to thinner paint coating.

It only takes a very thin layer of the clear coat, so it should have any issue...it also evens out the clear= more shine and more reflective

hmmmmm - in my look thru various dealerships the other day (another post here) I saw the same thing at the MB dealership, even pointed it out to the Salesman (who had saddled up alongside me) - he (of course) acted surprised to see it - haven't checked the Lexus as I've no interest in them

I just think it's a shame to put a junk (looking) paint job on such an expensive car

I wonder if this could be related to the removal of lead from paints?

I think its not the non lead content or the water base paint thats causing it, its the manufacturers cutting cost on color sanding
