It really boils down to the driver. Magazines test times for the M5 range from a low of 4.1 (as Richard has stated) to 4.5 and I don't recall seeing an E39 being that quick. I've also seen videos from Darren_Dallas out accelerating an SL55 AMG off the line in his M5. A few others on M5Board have also stated they had no issues beating an AMG car from a dig yet sooo many people keeps saying the M5 will lose from a standing start all the time.

Until you yourself have tried it first hand, I would refrain from assuming so much. As for me, I know I'll probably lose a standing start race with an AMG car since I have not had much practice at all.

If you can launch the car well then you don't need to rely on the low end torque

HA! I was being serious. I've never raced anyone from a dig before. And get this, I've never ever used launch control in my car.

I hate racing from a stop. too much clutch wear... I'll save it for when the car is fully in gear.

It isn't exactly the M5's forte anyway, that car is designed to go around the twisties VERY quickly. So I wouldn't bother using launch control either. Year after year the AMG's have more torque than the M and do out accelerate them down the straights, but in corners? The M shines and wipes the floor with em. I could care less about drag racing (my motto: any fool can go fast straight, throw a turn in there and we'll see some real driving), the M5 is a beast on a road course.

stock 550 is faster off the line up to about 20-25 than the E60 M5. But off the line, the E60 M5 is gutless.

HAHAH an Srt8 Grand Cherokee can beat a porsche carrera gt for the first 15 feet.. Means f*%k all.. to say the m5 is gutless of the line is so hilarious to hear.

Your 550i is gutless all around compared to an M5. There is nothing gutless about this car.NOTHING

I can't come up any reason why that apparent explanation was needed. I'm not biased, of course ..., and I have driven a 550i and your previous post is perfectly accurate.
And very restrained.

+1. The stock 550 is faster off the line up to about 20-25 than the E60 M5. The E60 M5 has little low end torque. But once it gets going and the engine is revving and the car is in the heart of its powerband, the E60 M5 is unstoppable and will run away from a 550 or an E39 M5 like they were standing still. But off the line, the E60 M5 is gutless.

It seems that with the engine that is most likely to be dropped in the F10 M5, lack of low end torque will not be a problem with that car (at the expense of one of the best engine sounds in the business).
