Thumbs up

Help - My 2006 M5 is expected to arrive in CA next week. The dealer asked me if I want it transported to my home in Las Vegas or if I wanted to drive it home. He stated that driving it home would be a great break in for the 2006 M5. Specifically, extended but different speeds is a great way to break in the V10.

This would be the case given the different roads it would take to get from Monterey, CA to Las Vegas, NV. However, I have always heard that prolonged/extended break in at speed is NOT good?

I would love to take the drive, but is this really a good idea with a brand new motor?

Thanks, Steve

Tons of people break in a car like that... I havent really heard of anyone disagreing with that break in technique...

Personally I wouldnt drive over couple of hours... like cross country I wouldnt do. Monterery to Vegas isnt too bad... stop in LA let the engine cool for a few hours and then continue on your merry way.

Read real race engine "rool of break in" and You will be surpriced. Two huors of high cylinder pressures with variable rates give you 5% more hp and more smooth cylinder lining.

Every one have they own way, but roling road give you answer!

You mean by that....the ideea of flooring it asap. The sooner you floor it the better. From 1km if possible, right? The piston rings seal up in the best way according to that rule...hmmm I wonder how much reality is in it!?! The best, a mechanic would know.

Hello Basilotto I live in Las Vegas and bought my 550 from Crevier BMW in Santa Ana in Orange County CA. I drove mine home in 4 hours do to stop and go traffic and you know how busy Highway 15 gets. You will not be able to cruise at a constant speed for more than 2 three minutes on that highway into Las Vegas. I say drive your car home its a great way to get aquainted with your new baby and have fun.
