Well, I'm about to turn in my 550 for an M5!!!! My one question that my sales rep. can't seem to answer is about the seats. It has comfort seats. I've seen so many different pictures that I really am not sure if I'm looking at the multi function seats or the comfort seats. What is the difference? Also the headrest in some of the pictures has what appears to be a double cushion....is this the comfort headrest, multi function or the standard headrest?????? I know I'm kind of nit-picking but, even the minor details are important, especially after the sports seats in my 550 that I have to say are the most uncomfortable seats. I appreciate any input. Thanks.

The comfort seats and multi-contour seats are the same thing. The headrests were changed sometime in model year 2008 -- for example, my 6/2008 production car has the older headrests that have the fold-out "wings" on each side. Sometime after my car was built, they changed the headrest style to an "active" one that moves out during a collision to help prevent whiplash injuries, etc. The new style ones don't have the fold-out wings...

(There's a thread about all this somewhere out there -- I'll post a link if I find it.)

Congrats on your "upgrade" to an M5!! What part of PA are you in again??

Thanks so much Rudy. I was reading about the active headrest, sounds like a great concept. I'm getting my M5 from another dealer that is going to deliver it to my dealership so I haven't even seen the car!!!!

Here's a link to the thread that shows the different headrests (new and old) on the multi-contour seats. I may have been mistaken about the new ones not having the fold-out "wings" since the photos show look like the wings do still fold out.

Also, I'm pretty sure the seats on the M5 have active side bolsters that move in as you corner to help hold you in place, etc.

Here's a pic of my 08 M5's comfort/multi-function seats (non-ventilated/perforated). The entire face of the headrest is the foldable "wing" unlike the older design where the foldable wing was the lower half section of the headrest. Congrats on the M5! It's a blast to drive, but a drag to gas up.

Roleez...your seats are actually the M5 (Sport) Multi-Function seats. The M Sport seats have the "M" on a full-sized headrest also, unlike the usual comfort seats which look a lot different and have the "layered" headrest look.

There are 2 designations for the M5 seats, Multi-Function and Comfort. The Comfort Seats I had in my M5 were the perforated ones you'd find on any 5 or 7 series with perforated comfort seats, although both Multi-Contour and Comfort models are still 20-way. As you will see, the seats are very different looking. The Sport/Multi-Contour Seats have thicker bolsters on the sides and thighs and have a much sportier look to them. I am sure they are stiffer also.

It gets more confusing on the M5 since both versions are theoretically "multi-function, 20-way." But if you want ventilated seats, the ones I had are the only option for that. I am not sure if they updated the headrests in the newer M5's to the full-size ones or not. My '08 was a 07/07 build and had the dual sections on them.

DrLev, thanks for the clarification! It does get confusing when it comes to distinguishing the characteristics among the M5 seats.

Here are the 3 different seat options for a 2008 M5
From what I can find I think these are the same for 2009's

Comfort Seats VS. Multi Function Seats. (I'm very excited)-dsc00002.jpg
The above and below seats are 4MA/4MF Multi-function seats
Active side bolsters, split seat back and fully adjustable headrest.

This is the standard M sport seat. You get this seat if you do not order
the 456 optional Comfort seat or the above 4MA/4MF seats.

Below is the optional 456 Comfort seat. This is mandatory to get Ventilated seats, you must also get full
Merino leather to get the Ventilated seats. Very nice seats and in my opinion the most comfortable.

Hopes this helps out.

Roleez,

Did you get the Multifunction option or not? Just curious.
