We're in the exact boat.
After 16 years of US Army line duty (presently in Iraq x 3) the Army is putting me out to pasture in Germany until I retire. I would like to take 507 horses with me to that pasture.... How the f**k can I go to Germany, a once in a life time, and not take a Beast? On the other hand, how can I justify $300 a week ($15,000 a year) in fuel? I've got a few months to decide...
One life... balance that against your checkbook and you should get the answer.
My one life tells me M5, my checkbook say 550.
Tick tock, tick tock.... I'm still thinking....
Even James Bond gives into the demands of an M!

I have an 550i sp0rt MSG, i love the car but i would take the M5 over it anytime of the day, way better and more aggressive looks.. I wish i had to make that choice.. Unfortunately I have to settle with the 550i, in a year or two will definitely will go to my dream car M5.. Just my 2c.
Anyway good luck as both cars are great, you can't go wrong with the ultimate driving machine..

I wouldn't go for a 07 M5 to be honest, non - LCI looses all the goodies.
You could actually try for a 09-10 535i with SAT and then put procede or JB3-4 on it which cranks out about 360 rwhp if you don't mind about the HPFP issues.
Anyways, if you can afford the M, not just the sticker price, but rather maintence, daily care etc of the M5, then go for it. Even the better if you can find a LCI M5

struggling with this issue myself .. currently drive a 535
How bad are M5 mpg's?
I dont really drive all that much maybe 7k/yr so I am not crazy about the MPGs as the deal breaker but dont want it to be a limiter for driving the car.
How is reliability? A certified M5 adds about $10k-15k to the price
