Maybe they can't make a cpu/ecu fast enough to keep up with a 500+ hp car

No AS or AFS cuz BMW M wanted the M5 to have a 'pure' driving experience.

I've read the concerns regarding the M5 not having active steering. However after reading through the downloadable M5 manual it states that the EDC (electric damping control) has 3 settings, comfort, normal and sport. It states that the sport mode is for those that prefer "overtly sporty shock absorber and steering settings". Can anyone comment first hand about how this sport steering feels compared to the active steering?

I'll know first hand when my 5 arrives in Feb.

They also decided not to go for Dynamic Drive. This was? because of the weight ( 30 kg ).

I dont know if this is true, im certain its not, as BMW canada states that its standard on M5. If you goto the summary, under standard technical equipment, you will see

Front and rear anti-roll (stabilizer) bars
Electronic Damper Control (EDC)

And im guessing substitute for AS on M5 is M Servotronic vehicle-speed sensing power steering which is standard as well. Im with iceman, shame on BMW for not giving the option of AS on M5, but cidair, could you comment on how this M Servotronic feature works/handles comapred to AS?

I?m actually only missing the AS when driving slow ( parking, maneuvering in tight places etc. ).

In all other driving the M5 steering is just about as good as it gets. Nimble, excellent feeling, good feedback and feels very stable ( no nervousness ) at high speed. The Servotronic is perfectly tuned, force level vise.

A big step forward from the " old " M5.

The thing I didn?t like with the AS on my 545, was that it was a little bit tricky, to know exactly how much to turn the steering wheel in all different driving situations.

Everyone, incuding me, seems to agree that AS is worthy of having for slow speed driving around town and parking lots. A lot of you have commented that you mainly drive slow and love your AS. I mainly drive slow too. But, I also often (at least twice a week) push my car on curvy roads (I have a favorite) and brake hard approaching the turn and accelerate through the apex. This is the same way auto journalist test these cars and have often complained about the changing ratio of AS.

Given that AS is fantastic for those that mainly drive slow and love the conveinience, what about the times when you push your car. If you never push your car as described above then no need to comment. But for those that push, does AS take away from the pleasure or does it deminish the awesome steering feel that BMW is known for during aggressive driving? It is this driving style and situation that concerns me about AS. I too love it around town.

I can put up with some inconvenience driving around town in order to not ruin my "fun" driving time.

I look forward to comments.

I had an e-39 sport and I drive my e-60 on the same "favorite" roads. I find that this car is much more stable through the twisties. I know this is controversial but the AS actually makes it more fun IMHO. As mentioned in other threads the AS improves the angle.
