I know many of us are drooling at the thought of the new M5 (me included ) and big performance numbers it puts up. Many of us are a little disapointed that BMW will not offer a traditional manual gear box but opted to go with the 7 speed SMG. I like the Idea of the new gear box but something caught my attention while reading my October issue of Roundel. The new V10 puts out 520 Nm of torque but the new tranny can only handle 550 Nm. I really don't think it needs it but wouldn't it be impossible to add a supercharger now . It seems like the M5 is beyond the reach of any modifier so guys like Dinan can't touch it aside from the suspension and cosmetics. What do you guys think? (Like I had to ask )

I think 550Nm is guaranteed figure and it can take more. Engineering can not be like in F1, where every gram is counted. Normally 20%-30% margin is used in basic mechanical engineering. If gearbox is well balanced and ran in it should take 10%-15% more easily. I used to tune my rally car up to 80% more power and 60% more torque and gearboxes took that well. Only back axles went broken every 20k.
