Most reviews say the SMG is jerky because they don't spend enough time driving the car, once you get used to it, you can make the shifts decently smooth.
SMG in the M5 is jerky because it is essentially a manual transmission with a computer doing the clutching. No matter what, it's still smoother than a manual tranny. I wish I could shift my current car like the M5 SMG did, both up and down.

I can echo what has been said already - I used to have an SMG M3, and as said, the majority owners that regretted their choice were manual owners wishing for an SMG car, I saw soooo few SMG owners complaining.

The SMG box was just super awesomeness on a level not seen and unlikely to be replicated until Southpark and Family Guy have kids together!

M3's are hella jerky when cold or if not shifted in the right place in the rev range - manual or SMG. Its the nature of the engine that does that. Also, remember that the SMG and manual use the gearbox and same clutch, the only difference is the method of gear selection. If you want a smooth ride, use s4, if you want fast changes (which will come with a jerk simply because of the ferocity of the change) use s5 or s6.

the previous e46 i had, the smg was fine till it hit around 65,000 miles. Then one day i tried putting it into gear and it wouldn't do anything but be on neutral so i let it cool down for 15 - 30 minutes tops and it worked fine again and never had a problem with it after wards, but my buddies smg took a crap on him on the frwy he was stuck there for about an hour waiting for a tow truck LLOL

I have been thinking about replacing my E60 with a small sportier M3 next year and I was doing some research and comparing the M3 to other comparable cars, I was surprised to find out that an 06 S4 is atleast 5grand cheaper compared to an 06 M3. I like the handling of the M3 but the S4 sounds real nice and has more power, I am still trying to figure out which one would be a better buy.

I love the M3 but there's just something about the v8 exhaust note of the S4 that makes me reconsider!

You don't find the 8000rpm inline 6 screamer appealing?

The E46 is a real drivers car that's nice and rough around the edges!
Maybe not the best DD, but one beast of a car!

I had a 2006 M3 SMG-II for two years prior to my 2008 M5 SMG-III and I loved it.

I honestly prefer the roughness of SMG-II over SMG-III. Most of the people that have complained about SMG haven't driven it enough and/or don't know how to properly drive it. Most people assume that it's just an automatic, which it's not. It's essentially a manual with an electro-hydraulic clutch and you have to treat it that way. SMG will roll back on you and it'll jerk sometimes. But, you're rewarded with CONSISTENT lightening fast shifts, throttle blipping and rev-matching.

Here's a short video that I made a while back in my M3 that shows how great SMG is...

However, as much as I loved my M3, when I look back at it, it was excruciatingly slow compared to my M5.

Herky jerky, no. Jerky at times maybe, it is basically a manual gearbox without a clutch pedal.

I currently am driving a SMG M3. I aboslutely love it. The gear changes are lets say forceful, almost slam into gear. It really feels like a sequential box in a racecar. It is night and day when compared with the new DCT, which is much smoother or tame. DCT has quickers shifts though.
