The warranty on my 04 545 expires in 60 days. Here's my dilemma.....should I bite the bullet and extend the warranty for 2 years at 3,500 and wait for the new F10 or should I pick up an 06 M5 for 2 years or so while I wait for the F10? I noticed there are quite a few low mileage 06 M5's available for about 60,000. How is the reliability on the 06? I know it's the first year for the e60 M5 and that scares me. How is the SMG? What should I be looking for or careful of. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Get the M5! You'll be smiling from ear to ear every time you drive it or look at it.
There have been some known SMG and VANOS problems on some early build 2006s so make sure you get a service history for the car to see if there are any anomalies. I'm sure there quite a few out there that are running just fine. Either way, since you're only planning on keeping it for a couple years, you should still be in the warranty period of the M5 should any problems occur.

Those dates are somewhat early build. I guess the really early build ones would be early 2005 as they probably started selling 2006 models mid 2005.
Do you have good rapport with your local BMW dealer? Ask your SA or someone in Service to see if they can run the service history off the VIN.

Unfortunately I don't have rapport with them. I'm posting the VIN numbers in case any of the members are able to get me the scoop. Thanks. WBSNB93566B582820 and WBSNB93526B581468.
