Hi,
I am very strongly considering a slightly used 550i, but recently drove a 2006 M5 SMG and of course loved it.
It is kind of hard to find a manual 550i which is what I would prefer if buying a 550i. Prices on 2006 M5 and loaded 550i both CPO are about the same. 2007 may be a little higher.
This will be my primary vehicle and I drive about 15K/year most of it stop and go traffic. For those in MA route 9 and lots of it.
I am wondering how much more per year my costs will be on
insurance, maintenance after manufacturer maintenance is over
other costs after CPO time is over

What do you think resale value would be compared to each other 4 years down the road? Especially if gas prices get back to $4+. I plan to keep the car for about 4-5 years. Which one would be easier to sell then?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I bet you he's going to get the 550.

From my experience, anyone who has ever posted a thread asking for opinions on the M5 and discussing its practicalities has ended up getting the "other" car. The M5 is a car of passion. There's no logical reason to get it so if you start to look at things like gas and insurance prices, you won't find one logical reason to get it.

Congrats on your future 550. Be sure to post pics.

+1. There's nothing practical about getting an M. If I had a chance to do it all over again, I'd be driving an M5 or M6. Something to look forward to I guess. Good luck with your decision. I'm sure you'll be happy with the car you choose.

Based on your type of driving (stop and go traffic) the 550s superior torque curve is probably going to be better for you. I have a 0-30-0 drive to/from work and I do miss the torque of my 550 occasionally. I don't however miss the auto - I love having a manual trans car again. The sweet thing about the 2008 550 manual is the new shifter....

You're dead on as usual, ECF. You really can't rationalize cars like the M5 - and long may that continue to be the case. It is indeed a car of passion - and you'll know right away if you want one.

Yup I think you'll be better off with the 550i. Even though it's not as powerful as the M5, as a daily driver car it's fantastic. It just have enough power+torque that you need and then some

If you're even wavering and you have to examine the PRACTICALITY of the two cars, then get the 550.... you are NOT READY for the M5.
