I know this is about the E60, but check this E61 535d m-sport with 167s...

I'm a huge fan of the M166s, but in this case I think these wheels suite the white-black look of the rest of the car a little better, especially if you are going for a more purposeful look. The M166s are IMHO more understated (-- ideal for company cars )

Thanks guys for the opinions and pics! I'm leaning heavily toward the 167s although I so admit the 166s look very nice also. Doesn't look like I can go wrong either way, but I agree with xBMWx's comment that the 167s look a bit "more purposeful". This is really evident on Nicke60gre's awesome looking ride. Now I just need to figure out a worthy purpose for myself . . . . Still could use an actual (noncomputer generated) pic of the 167s on an Alpine white E60. For some reason, I'm just not a big fan of the E61.

I have a 2008 550i sport on order (early Nov ED) which will come with the 172s. I hope to get the 167s by the time the boat arrives on west coast so the 172s will become avilable if anyone is interested. I hope I don't take a bath on the cost differential. BTW, does anyone know if I can just swap the existing stock tires from the 172s onto the 167s without doing anything else? Should I be also buying monitor / valve with each of the 167s ? (sorry if this is a dumb question)

Go with the 167's, over the 166's. You don't see as many 167's on E60's, as you do 166's.

And for whomever's AW E61 that is, that wagon is SWEET!

You're going to buy them anyway, so why put yourself through the torment of trying to find a good reason... especially if you're hanging out here and checking out all the other E60s on 19s Seriously, I did the same for about a month and then just went ahead and did it. Just save yourself the mind games

As for your question in bold above, its a straight swap. I have the same tyre size on my 166s as those fitted on the 172s. The 167s will be the same.

Thx, great advice ! LOL I have pretty much made up my mind to go with the 167s. However, I was told that the 'offset' was different between the stock 172s and the M6 167s. Yet I see that a number of 5 series owners have switched to the 167s. At the risk of showing my lack of knowledge about wheels, what is an 'offset' ? Is it necessary to correct?

If you plan to go for 275/30 tires rear, you can choose either M5 or M6 part# 167s. If you plan for a wider ...285 or more tire, then you have to go only with M5 167s, front M5/M6 wheels have exactly the same offset.

If possible, I'd like to use the same stock tires that the 550i sport will come with and just swap them on to the new 167 wheels. I don't exactly know what size tires will be on the 172s when the car is delivered but I will call dealer today to find out. I did learn that the 172s have offset of 18 (front) / 32 (rear) while the 167s have offset of 12 / 28. Unfortunately, I have no clue whether this is related to the M5 or M6 version of the 167s. Ugh!

BTW, the 167s really look sweet on your car!

If you want to swap tires from 172s (245/35/R19 - 8.5J Front - 275/30/R19 - 9.5J Rear) to 167s, then get the M6 wheel set (offset 12 Front - 17 Rear) if you like a more aggressive look without the need to put spacers, otherwise go with the conventional M5 style 167 wheel set (offset 12 Front - 28 Rear) which I have, but with 265/30/R19 tires and 15mm spacers on the rear wheels, so, I can mount up to 295/30 tires on them, at anytime. ...without spacers of course. For every 10mm wider tire I need 5mm thinner spacer, to keep the aggressive/wide look from behind.

PS. The largest the offset, the inner the wheel placement. ie. Wheel with offset 32 and 15 mm spacer fitted, is equal to wheel with offset 17.

Thanks!!
